DEFENDER 18, Feature Poster Design (Genre: Illustration/ MediumHi there, first of all I wanna thank all of you who (I think it safe to say) have become followers of ‘Far East Showdown,’ the full length Manga whose pages I am rolling out exclusively here on Deviant Art. Though I am not new to illustration, I am new to DA and I’m humbled and greatful to see your response nudging 2000 views per FES piece, after just 6 months here.
And so to say thanks properly, I’ve decided to embark on a second Manga story featuring the same two (I guess we can say popular at this point) lead characters from FES, Mei and Sung.
‘DEFENDER 18’ is a short story- that may evolve further (if you like it, I’ll be happy to do go ahead with that) in which Mei and Sung emerge as bio engineered Cyber beings, designed and manufactured by a Tokyo robotics company to specialize in high stakes risk security defense ops. The year is 2034, and the company releases two prototypes (Mei and Sung) to commence operations with the Los Angeles Police Department following a successful initial contract with LAPD.
For the benefit of those who want to dive in deeper, I’ve included an intro synopsis of The DEFENDER 18 narrative, followed by a prose passage from the opening chapter of this new story featuring our heroines Mei and Sung...have fun reading and keep on rockin’...Thank You!

DEFENDER 18 – SYNOPSIS:
In the year 2034 Ai, genetic engineering and robotics sciences reach a threshold at which corporations are able to design and manufacture hybrid part human, part machine cyber beings. Cybergenics, a Tokyo company beats its competitors to the rush to the gates to become the first to realize a fully tested and fully operable autonomous defense cyborg, capable of multiple specialization from bodyguard to armed forces combatant. The Company’s rollout and initial contract is with The Los Angeles Police Department to deploy a tryout of its first 2 ever ‘DEFENDER 18’ autonomous Ai driven Police Officer Borgs. If all goes well, A third model will join them in patrolling the streets of LA in due course.
On Monday April 23rd 2034 Officers Mei Sha Ling and Sung Lo Hu make history, assuming their duties ‘To Protect and To Serve’ by becoming the worlds first Cybernetic beings to be released into the public sector as LAPD rapid response police patrolwomen. As their brand name suggests, the two DEFENDER 18 Law Women have been designed by Cybergenics with the appearance and biomechanical engineering of human 18 year old girls. Their designers felt that a softer less threatening appearance and manner would induce the public to more readily accept and trust Mei and Sung rather than a harder edged authoritarian look.
DEFENDER 18 – SCRIPT INTRO, V1
At 6:55 that morning the two newly minted LAPD partners step into their Volvo 8.5 Bi turbo police pursuit vehicle. They complete all regulation safety checks including weapons checks. Then Mei turns to Sung “I guess after all the bullshit of getting this far, we must be something equivalent to sisters...” Sung guns the ignition and sends the Volvo sliding into the mist obscured semi deserted streets of downtown Los Angeles. “Can openers” “Huh?” “That’s what they call us at the depo”...adjusting her black Oakley shades, Sung shoots a withering glance at Mei from behind the wheel “We’re utensils, here to take bullets for them...to draw fire and be replaced...” Mei contemplates her new partner/ driver. The determined features and firm jawline of a Han Chinese, her jawline set in the resolute perpetual Han frown. Her people had been both the repressed and the oppresors, the downtrodden and the exalted, all of it, her ancestry was the visible end product of 5000 years worth of plagues, famine, persecution, genocide, deprivation of all kinds, but above all, survival. Her designers and engineers had gifted Sung’s human side the perfect genetic blueprint, ideally suited to the role for which she had been manufactured and was now bringing into the world...
Sung tosses the Volvo around turns in a tightly excecuted drift with a flick of her wrist, as though the 1.5 ton armored car were a paperweight. This time, a rarity, it is Sung who breaks the silence. “Disposable” “What?” Mei replies, distractedly looking out the car window as they pass by devolving streets outside.
“Us...expensive...” “...but expendable” Sung says, finishing Mei’s sentence for her. “Like the razors men use?” “Yeah...” Mei notes Sung flushing slightly red at the word ‘Men’ as she heads the Volvo eastward from Sunset Boulevard toward the emerging decrepitude of East Los Angeles. “Pull over here” “What?” “pull the car over, and stop here.” Sung brings The Volvo to a rubber burning screeching dead stop and Mei pops the passenger door, coughing from the acrid waft of tire fumes. Sung raises an eyebrow as Mei exits the police cruiser. “This is an unscheduled stop...The Department...” “I’m scheduling it...and I Am The Department, officer.” Sung starts a comeback, then thinks better of it and falls silent, reddening a second time.
“Need a fuckin’ beer” Mei says to no one in particular, eying a grungy package store on the corner of the garbage strewn greasy street. Mei pulls a Winston red, from one of the upper pockets in her police jersey, flips a silver LAPD zippo and absent mindedly blows a plume of blue smoke at Sung, who coughs resentfully (but this time thinks better of mouthing off).
Mei leans back into the black and white and grins superciliously at Sung through the cruiser’s open window. “What are you havin?...its on me.” “I don’t drink” “On this special occasion officer, I think we can make an exception, so- what are you havin? ...anythings good, long as its under 5 Bucks.” Mei chortles and Sung scowls. Then she smiles. “Nips?” “Sure...ideal...ya think I’d trust something with your reputation with a full bottle?...so what’ll it be, Jack and Coke, Officer?” “Yeah...sure...thanks...” Sung says from behind the wheel. “And I don’t got no reputation” She throws back as Mei leaves. “It's already begun” Mei retorts, neither breaking her stride nor looking back.
