at first I didn't like the composition...but the more I see how the dark and light portions interplay...the more I think it works well. Maybe you could have more firmly centered him in the frame to get a pure balance of light/dark - which would hammer home the focal point of his face.
have you thought about burning down the hi-lighted parts of his jacket?
