Description One of the many tutorials I cooked up, a bird wing tut will be up in a few.
This tutorial is aimed more at refining than teaching, I just don't do the circle-triangle-square thing, so this is for the people like me. And if you can't read anything, just say so!
-edit- Just looks better in general, and slightly more informative. Sorry if the text is tiny!

To me the elbow finger looks wrong mostly because it's unnecessary. Im not an expert on flight, but I think the muscles on the elbow wouldn't be really able to keep the finger straight...? My own gut feelings.

You mentioned that the wing membranes do not fold like fabric- do you mean by that that it's 'shorter' when the wing is folded, so it stays relatively tight on the fingers?

I must agree with you there, and as for your question, yes, if the wing membrane is always taunt then it isn't flapping about and creating drag or simply ballooning up between the wingfingers and compromising the support that keeps the creature in the air.

Ah, yes, of course.

So the membrane is relaxed only when the wing is completetly folded against the body?

That sounds about right!

xD I love elbow spikes, and they aren't entirely incorrect. Especially to stretch the membrane into different shapes. good tut though.

Thank you! I can't really put my finger on exactly why I don't like elbow spikes. I just don't.

I think it's great that you've put effort in charing your techniques and ideas on drawing dragon wings. It's always nice when someone put time and effort to help others with their drawing. However, I would like to give you some constructive critisism if you would allow; To say that one ay is "right" and another way is "wrong" when it comes to drawing is to really put the snare around your own neck. Other artist will be eager to hang you for something like that. When it comes to fantasy, there is actually no right or wrong, just different. Though I understand your thinking. Wings do need to be anatomically correct for the dragon to fly, but then it's better to just illustrate how to draw dragon wings with animal reference and anatomy studies rather than saying one way is wrong and one is right. If then an artist choose to draw the wings with 5 elbows and two fingers, it's up to them, you can still give them som handy tips on how ELSE to do it to make it more real. I hope you get my point, and that you get something out of my comment. Keep on working on those tutorials.

Yes, it is not correct to call other methods 'wrong' per-se, more like inefficient or incapable of sustaining flight. My only intent here is to show why they would not work as compared to a true 'bat' wing.

Is that supposed to be an actual -bat- wing or a fantasy one? Because if its meant to be a bat wing, its wrong <: 3

Well, I typed bat because the character limit would not allow dragon. I am well aware of the differences between this and a real bat wing.

Good :3 Just making sure. Maybe 'Drag' would be better than 'Bat' or mayhaps loose the '-edit-' Might make for less confusion.
