This is my entry for the Gears of War 3 contest. I found it interesting because since I was in the third grade I've loved character design and videogame concept art. It's something I've always wanted to do. I read the criteria and thought, "Man, I have to do this!" After looking for references and going through the Asset Pack, I found the Berserker and Anya to be the most intriguing, plus I just enjoy creating females more than males. The concept is pretty basic. I first thought of a versus screen like in a fighting game, thus the title "Anya Vs Berserker".
I noticed in a lot of the concept art for the videogame the lighting was very cohesive for the characters, using lots of blues and purples. When approaching this piece I wanted to create something that seemed it belonged in the Gears art world. At first it was very hard to find good reference for the character and monster. Luckily, the game came out on the 20th and I was finally able to find good reference to Anya's back apparatus. Thank god cause it looked like a turtle shell at first!
My favorite parts of the piece are the drool and blood, especially the cuts on Anya. I noticed she has a couple of bandaids on her right arm, so I created some nasty scratches to kind of explain why she may have those bandages. (Not sure if there's a real reason in the storyline or not but I guess I just took some artistic liberties.) Overall I'm really happy with the piece. My husband, Marcus, thinks it's my best yet, so we'll see how the crowd responds!
Not sure how long it took to create. I worked on it off and on over the past couple weeks when I was off work.
