Description
Born of Water. The first in a series of elemental pictures.
This too was a project for a Secret Santa, and this one took longer than the other I think. The mane and tail... Oh gods! I did and redid, redid those and redid it again. I finally just gave up. The twigs weren't bothering me... it was just everything else. I think I was having a bad day.
Anyhow, this is it in its (almost) entirety. There's a little more of the pic that I opted to crop out due to the fact that it just wasn't needed.
The little hole/waterfall is actually two pics of the Niagara Falls blended together, and there for no other reason than the fact that I looked at it and just decided to put a watery pitfall in. Same goes for the snake... honestly, did you even notice the snake before reading this? LOL Most people seem to look over it.
Done with CS2 and a Wacom Intuos3.

I first saw this on the NSHC forums (I lurk there hehe, I really should just join) and I was reaaaally hoping you would post it here because it's STUNNING! Your details amaze me time and time again (though I must say I though the little snakey was a feather or bead bangle LOL).
The water colors and the lush green in the background? Beautiful. And the way you captured the fright/alarm in the horse's eye is perfect too.

You should join! I have it on very good authority (aka was told) that the equine forums are open again if you were lurking and looking for a pic.
(thank you sweetcheeks. I thought of you when doing the waterpit!)

Whee, I just joined! I think I might go over to that equine forum and request something. Hrm. Or I may hang out a little and take some freebie requests to practice more. Either way, it'll be exciting.
Heehee! It's Niagara Falls again! That's just too cool. <3 I can't wait to see what else you create in the ways of elemental horsies.

Yay for noticing the snake! It's a creepy little thing, slithering up legs and all.
The splashes are .. different .. but I was attributing that to the elemental half. I wanted to do more to develop, but the image just got to a point with me that I had to stop before I ruined it because it was just frustrating me too much.

I think the problem with the mane and tail is that they don't look wet. Realistically, the horse would be soaking wet xD
I do love this, the aquas and greens and blueyness is pretty

(STOCK STOCK STOCK! I love your pics! )
*coughs*
I don't know, honestly. This one wasn't meant to be one when I first started, but it took off on its own and ended up that way... I want to do wind, fire and earth, maybe drudge up a few off of the Element theme as well (like sun and moon, ether, etc). What about you?

lacedupandnoweartogo In reply to arrsistable [2007-12-30 05:57:43 +0000 UTC]
I'm not sure. I know I have Fire and Earth left to do but I haven't decided if I wanted to do Idea. And some of the Oriental cultures have weird elements, like metal so that might be some what of a challenge.

That is unbelievable. Simply gorgeous. I'm trying desperately to learn to do manes and tails, and I use your pictures (and tutorial) to guide me. I am always stunned by your manes and tails. And the "watery pit" looks tremendously believable. Plus it's just gorgeous horse stock.

Aww.
The most important things to remember is to, firstly, go with the flow of the movement, and to remember that hair travels in clumps, not individually. There'll always be the fly-away strands, but the vast majority is left together. Use lots of layers when doing manes/tails, too, dodge, burn, use a few different colors. I usually pick my highlighting colors from the picture around it; if there's a yellowish/orangish sunset, then let the highlighting colors reflect that. The flow is very important too, though, because if it's moving wrong then the whole pic will look off. I'm sure you knew that, though.

rymbaby In reply to arrsistable [2007-12-30 04:46:33 +0000 UTC]
*soaks it all in* Yeah, I can get the movement to look decent, but my hair always looks too clumpy, like dolll hair. Or the strands look too perfect. It's hard to get the natural tangles. Well, practice makes perfect! So I shall keep trying.

But of course! Are you using a tablet or mouse?

rymbaby In reply to arrsistable [2007-12-30 05:19:21 +0000 UTC]
Both. I use the mouse for general smudging and whatnot, but I use my tablet for the mane and tail. I think I get more natural lines with it.

arrsistable In reply to rymbaby [2007-12-30 05:37:20 +0000 UTC]
Really? I use my tablet for everything. Have you tried using speckled brushes to help block it in?

rymbaby In reply to arrsistable [2007-12-31 00:38:41 +0000 UTC]
I've tried a few things. I've tried blocking out the base and adding strands on top, I've tried doing clumps of strands, I've tried following your tutorial using the speckled brushes to fill things in. That's gotten me the best results.
