Hah! Such a great title, right?
Ok, gosh. This was a commission done for Maeris , who, might I say, was absolutely superb with all her patience. Kudos to you, darling.
She wanted a horse, canter pirouette in a puddle of gasoline and ringed by fire, as if the horse started it. But, then she gave me artistic freedom and this is what happened.
This was my very first time ever working with fire. Holy cow! I used gobs and gobs of layers of it and eventually it began to click into place. I tried a regular mane, and nah, scrapped it. Did a fire tail, and nah, scrapped it, but that one was Joshs call. I drove that man nuts asking him to come look at it and tell me what he thought, what looked wrong, etc. By the end of tonight he'd sit on the couch and stare at me without moving. LOL.

Aaah, lets see. Obviously, the mane and tail were replaced. I lifted and curved the neck and brought the head in. Replaced the ears, opened the jaw and painted in some teeth, painted over the eye. I tilted the horse back, too, and altered/drew up/in the forelegs as well to add some dramatics, and give an overall pissed feeling, since that's what Maeris wanted.
And lots of other stuff, but I'll let you guys look if you want and try to figure it out.

This one is simply delightful. On first glance I wasn't sure if I liked it. The color of the horse threw me and the background made me lose focus for a moment. Being the srt snob that I am, though, I spun around in teh chair a few times to reset my brain and took a second look. Turns out my first impression was wrong.
The lighting in this is superb. Not only is the fire very realistic looking, you caught shadows and highlights in the horse too! You didn't make the same mistake a lot of people would have made by making the background dark and unadorned; you left the depth of it partially to the mind's eye and partially explained. I love the sky you chose and the embers/glowing sticks beneath the horse give it the perfect touch of realism. Best part? That TAIL!!! <3

I sat and stared at this a bit before I formed a coherent comment that was something other than "OMG this is GORGEOUS"
That being very true there is so much going on in this piece. I have been finding that fire is so difficult to work with because unless you are painting it from scratch you are using a photograph. Photographing fire is much easier said than done. What makes it so hard to photograph is what makes it so hard to manipulate and still maintain some realism. Fire is always moving. It is never the same creature twice. The shape twists and turns and the colors merge and separate and change. You have somehow managed to capture this aspect very well AND added it to a magnificent creature who is very much like fire itself. Horses are always in motion. Even when they are standing still and listening to something there is energy there under the surface. A tension of muscles, a way they hold themselves that lets you know that in an instant they will be somewhere else.
I love the fluidity of the mane and the strands in the tail. It looks like the mane is a gas burner with a super smooth, hot flame while the tail looks more like sparks and what may have started the blaze in the first place. It all blends together very well. You did a fantastic job with what looks like a very interesting commission request. It is very deserving of the page views and definitely worthy of all the second glances I know it has gotten.

You are so welcome. I love seeing art like yours. It inspires me to try new things and think outside my comfort zone. I have days where I think I am no good at this and then I think everyone must have days like that, but they don't let it deter them, so I keep trying. I am having a bit of an artistic block lately. I think it is the stress of the hubby being gone and trying to get the house ready to move. I have ideas, but they just are not translating. I hope I figure it out soon or else the ideas will start oozing out my ears and I fear that would be just one more mess I would have to deal with
