Description

September 1944: the Allies are meeting in Delhi, where they would discuss about post-war Asia. Many subjects would be treated, such as Chinese partition, India and the place of Japan in the region.

During 7 days, many points were agreed, some under reconsideration and some rejected.

Japanese expected more for their involvement in China but ended with lower expectations. Soviets and Americans gained more and managed to have better positions on the country. Here are the agreements concluded after the conference:

  • China would be divided in five areas of influence: Soviet, American, British, Japanese, French. The Soviet and Western Allies' areas would be separated along the Yangzi Jiang, Jialing Jiang and up to the Weihe Rivers ; Japan would have 90% of Manchuria and Fujian ; Tibet would be under British occupation

  • Destruction of Fascism

  • Territorial gains of Mongolia over Inner Mongolia

  • Territorial gains of Soviet Union over East Turkestan

  • United Kingdom would give independence to India for their active participation to WW2 (suggested by Japan, believing that refusing an independence to a colony which lost millions would be seen as an insult and would lead to an uncontrollable civil war)

  • Thailand would be under Japanese control

At the moment they were speaking, China was still resisting against Allied powers, making China's surrender unlikely for the following year
