Description
The devastating Second World War turned the mighty colonial empires into fragile territories, full of unrest, where colonized people are willing to get independence. Supported by Madagascar, Japan, USA and Soviet Union, movements of decolonization happened everywhere in the colonial empires: United Kingdom, after giving independence to India, wanted to turn colonies into autonomous states under the Crown, but preferred to give independence in order to not get the "colonizer" etiquete ; France wanted to create a French Community of States but failed due to the violence of conflicts in its territories, especially in Southeast Asia and Central Africa ; Belgium wanted to give Congolese the same rights as French but instead failed to keep Congo in its sphere ; Netherlands were relunctant to give Indonesia independence and got war instead, leading the Dutch Crown to give independence; and Portugal, desired to keep the colonial empire established for 6 centuries, failed to keep them due to war effects on its economy, unabling the country to keep its grip on its territories.
Between 1946 and 1960, a massive wave of independences flourished everywhere on Earth, putting an end to the colonial period.
