I can feel my heart pounding in my chest as I peer through the crack in the shutters, watching in horror as Nefraxis and his dark minions move through the streets, turning my fellow townspeople to stone with a mere flick of their wrists. The screams of the innocent fill the air, drowning out the cawing of the carrion birds that circle above.

I can't help but feel a pang of guilt as I hide here, safe behind my locked door and thick walls. But what else can I do? I'm just a simple tradesman, with no weapons or magical abilities to protect myself. It's a wonder they haven't found me yet, but I fear that it's only a matter of time before they do.

I wonder what Nefraxis hopes to achieve by turning us all to stone. Is it simply a display of power, a warning to any who might oppose him? Or does he have some twisted purpose in mind, some dark magic that requires the petrified bodies of the living?

The thought chills me to the bone, and I pray to whatever gods might still be listening for some kind of deliverance. But deep down, I know that there is no escape from Nefraxis and his wrath. All I can do is huddle here in the darkness and hope that I am not the next to feel his terrible power.
