They paint a face, a charming grin
saccharine sweet and paper thin
Behold the mask hiding the shame
make it palatable with aspartame
Beneath the mask, a trace is found
of who we are when no one's around
Like chocolate chips nestled in dough
our real selves are hidden below
Coated in sugar, glazed with cheer
the facade we wear is insincere
Beneath ersatz grins, practiced glee
the genuine hides from everybody
Bitter sweethearts, we are, you see
hiding our truth in pleasantries
Counterfeit coins can shine so bright
yet lack true value in the light
a kitten's paw, soft to the touch
can hide sharp claws, they hurt as much
Bright marbles seem quite jolly, round
rolling freely on the ground
but oh, poor marbles, lost, astray
No will of their own, they roll away
We too are guided by external things
dancing dolls on silken strings
Painted smiles and cheerful guise
even when it's time to say goodbye
Just like a cup of bitter tea
sweetened for palatability
we're a mix of truth and lies
confusing what's real and what's disguise
