Description
I experiment with 'recreating' historic scenes in Europe as they are represented in iconic pictures. But that was hard in former versions of Midjourney. One is of the last big student protests in Europe's took place in 1968 as far as I can see. In August 1968 the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslowakia (Eastern Europe). Old people may remember that. Students resisted tanks with bare hands, but in vain. It resulted in iconic photographs among others made by photographer Josef Koudelka, which are now owned by Magnum. So I cannot show them here as a a reference, but I took them as inspiration. You can seen the originals in artpil.com/news/koudelka-invas… and judge my efforts. Since this is the word biggerst art site.
Although it were the Russians who violently suppressed the deploying so called Prague Spring, many protesters like Jan Palach essentially directed their emotions at the docile attitude of the people who watched how he tanks in the streets bulldozed their freedom. Students protested, the people in the street were silent, with sad eyes, serious faces, on the verge of making compromises. This happens to be Prague in 1968. But making compromises is a human survival mechanism. It just often hasn't taken hold of (young) artists and of students yet.
Being in Europe now, I start to explore if the artistic use of the options of Midjourney generative AI on historic images can add some new life and new (hindsight) interpretation to forgotten history. There might be a role for AI to translate old photographs to a young audience. I dont know I am just experimenting
