Description

The whistle blew loudly and the group of handlers dashed across the sand, racing to wrap the gauze around their partner’s “wounds”. Clayton watched the group scramble enthusiastically to complete the task. “Beach Day” had been a genius invention on the town hall’s part. Not only did this highlight local vendors, but it gave a great opportunity to teach beach safety and first aid. In addition, it also opened the conversation for those who wanted to be lifeguards in the future.

Clay looked down at the Tokota laying in the shade of the umbrella of the lifeguard’s seat. He was proud of her, with all the training they were working on she was becoming extremely well behaved - a model citizen if he said so himself. He was excited to work on some training for Malibu today as well. After the handler and Tokota session later in the day, he was going to use some of the excess equipment pulled out to work on training Malibu on some tasks she could assist him with. However, he still had quite a while before he would have the time for that today, so he returned his attention to the relay race occurring on the beach.

    Later on -

“C'mon Malibu.” Clay said as he left his beach chair in the shade to venture to the previously marked off strip of beach where the spine board races occurred. Earlier in the day he had facilitated the spine board races; this was where the Tokota had to drag a weighted spine board through the sand to the handler, then drag the handler on the spine board back to the initial starting point. It had been extremely entertaining to watch the handlers and Tokotas work together trying to coordinate this. Luckily, everyone was able to complete the task safely and seemed to have a fun time competing. It had given him the idea that this would be a useful task for Malibu to learn, as she could help him drag stuff around on the spine board.

He had set up the spine board and weight, along with introducing Malibu to the task at hand. He was now sitting in the sand several feet away, encouraging Mal to pull the spine board all the way to him. She was doing a great job so far, and seemed to be very determined on the task.
Overall, he and Malibu had really turned a corner and were becoming great partners. While she was definitely unexpected in his life, there was something about the big lumbering beast that just made him happy and content to spend his time with.
