The Crystal Gems look a tad too human for me. Like, from an artist’s standpoint (in my brain anyways) I’m thinking: “These are extraterrestrials who are the physical projections of light emitting from space rocks. Do something more interesting and creative w/ that god damn it! Make your show have more personality/character/distinction from other shows!” Idk, whatever.

In the original 2013 pilot, to my understanding, the gems were originally from another dimension. If that had been the case, I could’ve let their humanoid appearance slip, but for me, I feel they could’ve gone for a more extraterrestrial physique or something. Ex. the martians from War of the Worlds. That book was far ahead of it’s time, especially w/ the depictions of the aliens. Intelligent life evolving differently from us, but vastly superior in technology and intellect; but of course, the scientists/general public in those days pretty much said: “No, no, no, only us humans are intelligent. Therefore, intelligent life will look like us”. So in the sequel, new aliens had a more human look, which became what we know today as “Grey Aliens”. Large head, grey skin, big black eyes, abnormally thin figure, etc. A mindset that is still very prominent in modern media/fiction.

*sigh* I’m just pretty much venting out my creative frustration w/ modern media at this point, but I digress, let’s just continue on.

What I’m trying to say is, the show could’ve done more. My opinion of the show in general is “meh”. If you find enjoyment from it, that’s fine. If you don’t, that’s also fine. As for me, personally I don’t outright hate it, nor outright love it. I’m more of a casual fan, and even then I don’t really watch it that much or often. Why I’m doing this is because I’m somewhat a perfectionist in a weird sense. Only for art rather than mundane stuff like organization and all that. If I see something that catches my eye, I’ll 1). analyze it, 2). process it, and 3). See what I would do w/ it and how I’d handle it. Give it my own personal touch/flare. If you are able to make heads or tails of what the hell I’m trying to say at all, good for you and thanks. If not, sorry.

From Left-to-right:

Amethyst: Since her class of gem are warriors, I figured I’d go w/ rock golems for inspiration. Out of the three gems, Amethyst is more into human activities and the most social w/ the humans. That’s why she is wearing (poorly fitted) clothing and a wig to appear more like a human. In my mind, it’d make sense for her to wear them and seem more human, so to speak.

Garnet: For Garnet, I kinda had no clue what I was gonna do, and the whole thing was improvised and not thought up before drawing it. After drawing the top half, I had to figure out what to do w/ the lower half. Several tries later, I found a solution to the problem. Her limbs are hovering close to each other, like magnets. And to clue in Sapphire’s ability to levitate.

Ruby & Sapphire: Next up, Sapphire & Ruby. For Sapphire I added her hovering/levitation abilities into her design and her single eye. Had som trouble w/ figuring out her hair as to not look too “earthy”, but I found a solution to that. Ruby was inspired by rock golems, much like Amethyst was, but I gave them a more robust and blocky build compared to the amethysts/jaspers.

Pearl: Pearl was the first one I drew (and acted as a templet for the others). I kept her slim and petite figure/build and her ballerina inspired appearance from the show. Her fingers function like the ones from Peridot’s limb enhancers. In stationary mode, they form a stacked formation. She hovers a few feet off the ground.

For their voices, I’d say it’d have some reverb to it similarly to Pearl’s holo-pearls.

This could’ve also been used as a good message, like to other humans the gems are freaky lookin’, but to Steven, who grew up w/ them, are seen as family nonetheless. But oh well, what we got is what we got.
