Description
So, having recently rewatched 2018’s The MEG I felt like doing another redo of the shark’s design and story to be more closer to the book (what I know of it anyways) and add my own pitch of artistic interpretation.———
Info n’ sh*t: As I’ve said before, I felt there was a lot of potential for the exploration of this ‘hidden ecosystem’ in the trench. Like, what else is down there? Is there any other prehistoric (or undiscovered) predators down there? How many more are there? Are the sharks inbreed due to low populations? Do these sharks differ greatly or very little from their surface dwellering ancestors? They can’t be only surviving off giant squid, so is there other prey items? etc.
Now, onto the new stuff:
Meet the descendent of the giant prehistoric fish: Leedsichthys. It was during the late Jurassic that these giant fish got misplaced in what was then the mariana trench. There they stayed as this was long before the arrival of megalodon. The lifestyle of these fish are similar to that of modern whales and live in family groups as a result of the megalodon’s presence. Being of equal size to the sharks, “Leedies” are capable of defending themselves, but aren’t invincible. Same goes for the sharks; if they’re flipped upside down, like modern sharks, they become temporarily immobile/stunned and are helpless.
Involvement in the Story: After the discovery of this underwater ‘lost world’, Leedsichthys were discovered living in the ecosystem. For the next week, (right when the movie begins) the scientists observe and study these magnificent prehistoric giants when they become stuck in the trench. The only option is to tow the sub back to the surface. The rescue team heads on down to do just that, when they are caught in the middle of a megalodon attacking a Leedsichthys. This confirms the existence of megalodon in the present day. The other members of the pod try to fend off the attacker, to no avail. During the chaos, another (but smaller) Meg shows up and joins in on the attack. The rescue team finally manages to get the sub hooked up and begin towing it, but the injured Leedsichthys; as it tries to flee, is caught and dragged up also. The warm blood shields the two predators all the way up to the ocean’s surface and are unleashed onto the modern world/ecosystem.
