Description Hello DA folks!

New painting comes to my portfolio today. It was chosen for the print in ImagineFX Rising Stars 2011 magazine, which I am very proud of. It is still hard to believe that success after a few months considering the massive amount of young talent out there. I mean, really, some people are crazy in their skills. Usually these people have very strong interest in their subject or particular style, which comes naturally to them. While I have a hard time choosing what I really want to pursue, fantasy themes are what I always end up with. I guess that's the answer for me.

My idea for this painting was pretty simple - a man approaching an arabic city on speedy camel. It sounds almost enough for a nice painting, but I wanted to show a power stronger than humanity. Capturing the creature in frame would be another one in a row with paintings with big monsters. I had in mind wonderful shadow shapes after walking in nearby forest and it became a perfect fit for this painting. I don't really know the exact story - but I feel two ambivalent emotions anxiety and calmness at the same time. It is a game of colours, shapes and moods.

Perspective gave me more trouble than I expected, so I built an ugly 3d basis on which I could build my planes of city. You can notice how accurate some shadows are on stairs and I doubt I would made them so well by hand. It was the very first time I used 3d this way

I think the piece of eden takes care of that side. So much power in so small ball.

The color and scope is incredible. I feel like I'm in it, a tiny person looking up that huge expanse of rock to see they terrifying, looming shadow. GREAT job.

Dude. If that's either a hawk or a dragon(or a Hybrid of both which would be beast.) It's pretty darn cool.

Wow, love your gallery and your neat cool painting style!
I hope you will not feel offended though if I say that the perspective in this one doesn't look very much natural to me. It's very 'strained' (look at that jar), it kinda looks like everything is falling, especially that sort of building in the foreground. Anyway cool work, keep it up!

Ranarh In reply to artozi [2011-11-24 13:28:29 +0000 UTC]

What I mean is to show a hint of what is going on where we are not looking at. Just like you used the shadow of the beast in your picture instead of showing the beast head on. Mirrors (or shiny armour, for example) can be used to a similar effect. All too often painters make the whole scenery stop just in front of the picture, as if it was on a stage, and spend too little thought on what is going on behind the viewer.

Now I see Very good point mate! I love all these kind of tricks (mirrors/glasses/water/fog/shadows and so on). Showing something not straight-away is good tool for illustration but doesn't work well for showing creature design very well The biggest problem nowadays is still people reapeating each other. That's a real shame, because lots of creativity gets killed this way. Thanks for comment

I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately it is much easier to become a good painter, than to become a good artist.

I absolutely LOVE the perspective on all the city buildings with the great attention to detail with some of the visual vagueness that one gets when viewing something that intricate from afar. Well done.
