Description
While graphics have improved over the years, Link's design has taken some definite steps backward. At least when I looked at those chunky pixels, I imagined a cool scrappy kid elf, and not the androgenous pretty boy that Nintendo's designers want him to be now.This was done for the Avalanche blog "Legend of Zelda" tribute for the 25-year anniversary of the first game.

I don't think looks really androgenous to me at all. When I see him in twilight princess he seems very masculine. 10 year old link is a bit femminine but he's 10 afterall. Myself I'm pseudo androgenous because I don't think I could pull off being manly with my style and looks.

links hair colour changed over the years too; first brown, then red, now blond.

Well, the artwork for Zelda 1 showed that he at least had regular stature, but he wasn't what you'd call a "pretty boy" back then.
Though that might be what Toon Link looked like without cell shading.

lately I've noticed that the main characters of these types of games are very androgynous. almost jrock singers guys. soon link will be in short blouse and vest. wait and see.

hm... pretty characters DO sell games, although it is no garantie that they are good, but people already bought it and discover later if the game is good or not, so win for the game company until everybody start to say it sucks.
Pretty pixel boys sell games (and Zelda is not the only example) so Nintendo is going that way too. Although I also liked the alternative style in Wind Waker.
On a side note: I loved how androgenous modern Link is heeheheh his waist is f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s

I agree with you %100 about Link Artsammich. Link should be a little kid but the one you just drew the tall one is better than the twilight princess. Keep up the great job and thanks for the inspiration.

Damn right! I can't stand Link's design these days but I'll happily play the old NES/SNES/GB(C) games. Still dunno why he has pink hair in Link to the Past though.

First - Hilarious look on the Legend of Zelda Series
Second - The little one already new that the tale one was going to ask " Does this tunic make my ass look big?" and promptly says " yes... yes it does"
Third - Is that really how you see the current Link? Does height really give you the ego of a senior year cheerleader?
Forth - Looks Gizmo borrowed Link's extra clothes for the day...

I only played the game at my cousins' house, and I never looked at the booklet. So this was all just in my imagination.

The really old booklets made him look like one of Santa's ugly pudgy elves, not a pretty elf. D:
But it wasn't long until he got a make-over. I mean in the 80s cartoon he was still a pretty boy. I think they wanted to go with the more traditional fantasy elf look after a while.
