Spanish Conquistador Panfilo de Narvaez led one of the earliest expeditions into Eastern North America, landing in Florida in 1528. Immediately he read out the "Requerimiento" to the Tacobaga natives, which claimed that the Pope had authorized him to convert them and enslave any who resisted.Anyway, they didn't speak Spanish, and unsurprisingly Narvaez got fucking merc'd later down the line.
