Description
A flying whale in the clouds. Many images depciting whales flying in the sky inspired me to create this render. It's a very common theme isn't it? - flying whales. A lot of anime themed images have this kind of subject matter. I also love how anime depicts clouds, it's probably one of my favourite aspects of that style, so I wanted to show that here. There were a lot of things that kind of went wrong during the creation of this scene. I initially thought that the cloud work was going to be simple. At first I just placed a lot of mandelbulbs and clumped them together. This looked really unusual and made me realise that it required more planning than I thought.
The whale took 3 attempts to create. First I tried cutting out a shape out of a rectangular block - it ended up too blocky. I then tried to make a sort of skeleton for the whale's shape - I quit halfway through. I finally just ended up getting a 2D image, tracing over it and building up individual layers until I achieved the shape I wanted. The whale then had to be broken up into around 27 segments and enlarged in order to work around the individual object size of the editor.

Ever since I've discovered the 'ask a friend with a more powerful device to render your image' hack, the quality of my images has been far better than before. Big thanks to them for their help once again.
As much as I would love to create more renders with anime-style clouds and improve my skills in making them, I just can't. Switching between 'render' mode and 'model' mode to check how small adjustments looked took way to long. It took around 2 minutes each time for a partial image to form and show me how a small adjustment/addition looked. Again, I would love to, but no more cloud-heavy images unless I really feel like it. Like my last post, this was a pretty large render for me so I'll probably be making something smaller in scale next time.
