This is so wonderful! I really like all the detail, from the scales, to the spikes and fangs, the wings , design, simply astonishing. You have a great talent for drawing details and realistic creatures, I admire you

How long did it take to draw this?

This one was between 20-30 hours for the final piece alone.  I did a pretty great design of design work before hand though.

Markov raised his right arm and whistled. Everything had gone well so far, well, as well as could be expected given the circumstances. Now to make one final test.

There was a flash as a gigantic shadow passed over him, blocking out the sun, before whirling away into the distance. Following a slow, lazy curve the Thornhawk banked, an object the size of a house cutting through the air like a knife. Then it focused and made a beeline for its target. Amazingly it just seemed to get larger as it got closer and Markov realized that at the speed it was moving it could brush him aside like an insect. He stumbled back arm still raised high.

*Thud*

Markov sat pinned beneath the large creature his arm grasped tightly by an oversized claw and fortunately too thin to crush. He let out a relieve sigh as the Thornhawk looked down at him quizzically.

"Ok, bad idea. You can't falcon with dragons."

I like the idea of dragon falconry, albeit with much smaller dragons.  Thanks for that

The art is fantastic, absolutely stunning. But as far as the dragon, I feel that his wings may be too small. o.o Has a nice strong and sturdy body, a round belly showing that he eats quite well. xD I feel as if the wings should span further to account for his mass. On the note of the wings, I love how there's a little flap near the tip the way a bird's wing is, like a secondary wing. xD Not to sound rude or anything. D: I think the drawing and painting and approach and EVERYTHING is absolutely stunning. Especially loving the lighting and how the shadow was applied to the ground, and the body language of the man on the ground.

arvalis In reply to x-LittleOne-x [2014-01-19 23:57:21 +0000 UTC]

That's not a belly, those are massive pectorals to get him off the ground.  The wings have similar proportion to a harpy eagle cdn.c.photoshelter.com/img-get… .  If I make them any bigger it will make his head look small and the wings would take up far too much of the composition.

Laughing-Dove In reply to arvalis [2014-01-20 15:34:18 +0000 UTC]

There is still an issue of weight with huge pectorals, actually a bit more of one because muscle is heavy (and I'm not sure I can think of any aerodynamic benefits to splitting the wing like that as opposed to have it in a solid piece?). If it was an actual creature the wings would probably need to be quite a bit bigger and broader, but like you mentioned that would mess with the composition you've chosen here, so that's mainly quibbling. That said I am curious as to what exactly is going on with his talons? It's like he has a revered hallux on the one foot, maybe a little fantastically far-set-back , but the closer foot I can't quite...get what's going on there.

arvalis In reply to Laughing-Dove [2014-01-20 18:40:17 +0000 UTC]

A real animal this size would never be able to fly, you run into all sorts of weight to lift ratio issues.  You would need impossibly large wings and then the chest would have to get more and more robust to be able to move the wings and would end up never in the right proportion.  In general I like smaller wings, they let the rest of the creature show better.  Giant wings alwayys take up too much attention, there is a reason most dragons in film and games are design with smaller than "realistic" wings.  The benefit to splitting up the wing shape into two separate pieces is so the wings can fold up.  Those supports in the wing are not fingers, they are more like slightly flexible boney barbs with skin stretched between so they do not fold in like a bat wing.  The overlap between the secondary webbing and the primary webbing create a solid wing shape.  The feet are like these bdml.stanford.edu/twiki/pub/Ri… only from more of a font angle.  You cannot design a dragon to be perfectly realistic, you design it to be believable to general folk.  The closest thing to a real dragon is a rhamphorhynchus and they were only the size of a hawk for a reason.

I also saw the link to your tools in ps, do you have any rules for them, like "only non-commercial use" etc.? Just to be on the save side. (I have some of them already, I wonder if someone just took them from yours and included them in a tool-pack or if you got those from someone else ... would be better if those people just linked to the original creators (if they remember them...lol).)

gdpr-18918873 In reply to arvalis [2014-01-19 14:55:12 +0000 UTC]

the tail is very long and unbalances the whole body, also the wings are too small, they should be at least twice the size to be able to lift the body, but I guess it's something that can refer to most dragon designs

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

arvalis In reply to gdpr-18918873 [2014-01-19 15:31:20 +0000 UTC]

The wing proportion was a nod to harpy eagles cdn.c.photoshelter.com/img-get… as they have shorter wings.  An animal this large could never fly, even with appropriately large wings the wings would be too heavy for the animal to use them effectively.  I also prefer shorter wings because they are much easier to fit into compositions.  As far as your issue with the tail, that just sounds like you have a problem with dragons in general though.

Can I guess how/what it is hunting?

He hat - compared to his bodey short teeth -> hes hunting by using his massive body to crash down on his prey and break bones.

how would you let it hunt?

He uses his feet to kill.  He doesnt need very large teeth to tear off chunks of meat.
