One of the barks seemed… far less interested in the parade. Slinking away at the sight of its fellow nudibarks excitedly greeting the strangers. Jane found this behaviour very strange and quickly broke away from the Parade to follow her. (She hadn’t been the smallest bit interested in the pets regardless before this point, growing a little restless waiting for her team to finish their awwing.)
Eventually the battered bark turned a corner, slipping into the starlight pools and beginning to paddle in circles… that made sense. Jane sighed, sitting down at the edge of the pool with her back to the bark. “The loss of those you had a duty to protect…” she uttered, closing her eyes, “…it’s haunting you, isn’t it?”
The sound of approaching footfall alerted her enough to open her eyes. It seemed her team had caught up with her. Good. Comforting, they would notice her absence. And just in time too, as almost on cue as she finished her sentence to the nudibark, the clearing filled with an unmistakable phantom sound - children’s laughter.
