Description
Cooling off
You smile to yourself as you slip into the cool lake water; it feels nice against your burning hot skin. You hate to admit that you spent a bit too much time today napping on the roof of the nursery before you were found and told to get down before you got stroked by the sun. You’re pretty sure the sun doesn’t have arms and the lady was just trying to scare you, though you think it would be pretty dope if the sun really did have arms. You did feel a little sick though… that’s why you came to the water! The water always helps to soothe your soul. Even if you feeling sick was because of the sun and all that napping in the bright sunshine really was not the best of ideas given your dark grey body, you keep telling yourself that if it was so bad for you then the warmth wouldn’t be so irresistible!
After the initial bout of shivering that always comes from cold water and the sharp pain in your back, you start padding out into the water. The shivers were just the water saying hello you suppose and the pain was probably just the hot stuff leaving your body.
Though you don’t really have time to think about all that… after all you have the tummy rumblies now and nobody ignores the tummy rumblies and gets away with it. Ok maybe they get away with it sometimes. But you won’t today. Little stomach gremlins need their daily dose of deliciousness so that they can continue their rad party inside you.
It suddenly dawns on you how long it takes you to get where you want to go from here. It always ends up this way… You’re not entirely sure why you always forget this until you’re half way there but you do. Your brain just isn’t great at doing its job properly a lot of the time and that’s ok. Nobody is a perfect little star or something like that.
Honestly, all this swimming is kind of tiring. But then everything is tiring to you… You have considered taking a nap in the lake before, just letting those icy cool waves flow over you as you float on by. Though last time you tried to nod off here you ended up with a mouth filled with water and pond weed.
You try to shake that thought from your mind as you continue to paddle towards that special place you’d found not that long ago - the fabled secret floatmelon patch! Of course, only you call it that because if you told everyone about it then it wouldn’t be a secret anymore and then they might eat all your precious floatmelons. If you have no melon then… well… then you have no melon to snack on and that would be a sad day for both you and the gremlins that probably exist because you’re sure you read it in a book or something.

Gardening
After what seemed like forever you finally reach it - the floatmelon patch. Your mouth waters at the sight of the neatly placed plants as they bob alongside you. When you first found this spot there were only three melons floating aimlessly in the water. They were probably brought to that spot by wild birds or maybe someone had spat some seeds into the water as they walked past or perhaps it had been some kind of magic that had brought them here.
No matter what it was, they were there and you had been harvesting and planting seeds ever since. It was you little garden, surrounded by bushes and branches that cut it off from the rest of the lake.
You go about tending to the plants, granted they don’t really need much attention at all in the slightest but it makes you feel better knowing that you have at least made sure all of them are healthy and free from any bugs or unwanted bite marks. Take the small on near the middle for example, that one had a nasty bite taken to one of its leaves so you quickly tore it off. You aren’t entirely sure if that was the right thing to do in that situation but nobody ever taught you have to grow a huge cluster of floatmelons before and they seem to be doing alright so you must be doing something right.
You take a moment to survey the crop while looking out for any bites or bugs. Most of the floatmelons are growing up to your standards and while there are some awfully small ones you leave them alone to do their growing plant things. Not all of them are going to grow at the same rate, you assure yourself as you continue to paddle around the plants. The leaves sure do tickle your sides as you brush past them and you try your best not to let out a giggle. It isn’t that you do not really like your laugh. It has never really bothered you. It’s more a matter of you not wanting anyone to hear you. If they heard you then they might eat your melons and then there would be no more melon snacks and wait… did you already think that? You can’t remember… in any case there are some small and not good yet melons and there are some really great melons that if you left any longer without picking would probably start to rot or whatever it’s called. You aren’t entirely sure how plants work but you know that the last time you left one for too long it tasted really bad and then you threw up so it definitely is not a good idea to do that.
You decide that it would be best if you pick the two really big ones so that they don’t go bad. Besides they will make a lovely sweet snack when you finally do get around to chopping them up.
