Finally once again, another random mare for my First Contact War universe.Playing around with some random design thingies, having a bit of fun.
Got distracted quite a bit while making it, but ok
A bit thicker atmosphere than the last time I did this style. Gotta try it some time.
Also playing with cast shadows, randomly.
Approx time: ~11 hours

My eye kept going to the background rather than the pony? That big empty space above her head where the light is coming in is distracting. Maybe trim tree in the foreground on the right side so the image doesn't direct the viewer up so much? Those two trees together are like big visual arrows going LOOK UP HERE!!! but there is nothing up there to see.
I think if you trim the right tree then the rock shape behind her and the general foreground would become more like the shape of the pony herself and that would leans the eye to flow to the right part of the painting.
Also you could just try cropping the whole thing down a little (3-5% off the top) to see if it puts more visual focus on the subject.
This is very being nitpicky though. Overall, great work!
Secondly, the shoulder, where the blue ruffles are could use a little more detailing. It looks like it needs some kind of texture or even noise, something that brings out the contrast and makes it look less like soft clay. The face is really detailed and high contrast but the front legs look like they are covered in wet modeling clay because of the lack of similar detail work.

Woooow! The level of detailing is amazing! And the shading and colouring is absolutely stunning! I really love the detail and thought put into the background, many people become lazy with backgrounds but the level of care and detail you've put into yours is amazing!
The character herself is honestly breath taking, she looks almost real and the freckles are so very cute!
I honestly don't think there's any way you could improve such a beautiful drawing, keep up the good work! I'm blown away by the detail and skill shown in this drawing and I look forward to seeing more!

I find the coloring base with the pony to be wonderful. The glimmering beauty that shows within the eyes and the jewelry is a eye catcher and the originality is amazing. The texturing is fantastic.
The only Issue I have with this is the dull gray within the background that takes away from the realism. It looks like a dark blur that was put in the background simply to be there. I would understand if you put the coloring there to bring out that bright light shinning upon the main point of the picture its just over done with black and gray.

This piece is very gorgeous and well placed and I do believe that it displays a wide range of in depth skill and also simplicity.
The lighting is what really draws me in as it is shown in a way in which makes the character stand out among the background and scenery surrounding. The lighting also frames the face nicely and makes it stand out, which is great since the expression is wonderful and should be the main focus point. The shading is nice, not overly dramatic but not too subtle allowing the fabric and clothing to look realistic and almost 3D I especially like the almost opalescent stones, they are wonderfully done, along with the eyes, they are soft and not too prominent but keeping the eye drawn in towards it.
My only slight thing with this is that the fabric coming from her hat, It could maybe be made to look a little bit more flowy and less opaque but again that depends on what kind of fabric it is. The hair looks a little plastic, I would like to see more little loose bits coming from the edges, nothing too drastic, all in all the hair is fine but could maybe use some work, although the hair shading on the other hand is wonderfully placed again keeping up the almost 3D look.
The background is simplistic, but not in a bad way, Its not too overwhelming, allowing the character more spotlight, and it still shows effort, the shading and lighting especially on the foreground is good, still keeping the simplicity~

She looks as if she could walk of the screen and into real life at a whim. Amazing how this pony keeps all of the original cartoonish features but conveys the feeling that you're looking at a real, living, breathing creature. And those eyes!
