Banal and cliche, but well-handled. The stark black of the cuts against the light skin appeal to me.

Critique

I've never been a fan of artwork with no real backdrops. This is blank, never a good thing. The blade bugs me the most though. It looks very blunt, and more like a piece of twig/wood than a knife. It also looks very out of place somehow. This piece should be cropped differently, meaning that more elements should be incorporated to make it look more complete. There's no hand holding the blade for example. The cuts on the arm do not look very natural. If you cut yourself on the left arm, using your right hand to cut, the cuts would tilt the other way. Also, the feeling I get from the piece is very angsty and stagnant.


Praise

The shading looks alright. The arm doesn't look flat, and certainly is well detailed. Good job on that. The flow of the blood also looks natural coming down the underside of the arm as well. I like the little drips, although maybe blood would make even bigger drips since it's so thick? Again I must compliment the small details on the arm, like the freckles on the left. Very good. The anatomy/proportions of what little I can see of the arm also looks good.


Conclusion

This looks like just a sketch to me, not a finished piece of artwork. It needs more work for that. A more mature concept to draw probably wouldn't hurt either. "Cutting" is a very strong cliché and needs to be avoided. Personally, I can't see why anyone would fav this, but then again I'm picky...

Oh, and by the way, describing your artwork both technically and philosophically is a good idea. It will give the commentors more insight in your work.
