Description

March 1st is the self-harm or self-injury awareness day!

This is something I sadly dealt with for about four years, so I wanted to spread awareness about it since there is a lot of misinformation.

So, a lot of young people have to deal with this. It's not something that should be made fun of or romanticized. It's a very scary addiction that can lead to much worse things. Like all addictions, it starts by going through something, trying to cope with it and while some use drugs or alcohol, some end up with this. Then, when it gets tough, you go right back to it. Some do it to feel alive, some do it because they wanna gain back control over at least something, some do it because they think they desire it, and some do it because of how addicting endorphin is. It's a serious issue that needs gentleness and support.

Semi-colons and butterflies are symbols of self-harm. Semi-colon means that the writer (you) could've ended the story (your life) but kept going (kept living). Meanwhile, the butterflies are part of The Butterfly Project. Basically, you draw a butterfly where you wanna hurt yourself. Someone can do this for you. Then, you can't hurt yourself while the butterfly doesn't fade away.

I now wanna share some coping mechanisms and what can you do instead of self-harm:

  • Drawing
  • Drawing on the place you want to do it
  • Drawing how you feel
  • holding ice
  • Snapping a hairband
  • Put bandaids on the place you wanna do it
  • Video games
  • Crochet (this is a relaxing activity, however it might use something sharp)
  • Going on a walk
  • Working out, running
  • Making origami
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Writing your emotions and thoughts
  • Watching funny videos
  • Cleaning
  • Talking to AI
  • Talking to someone if you can
  • Sleep
  • Waiting it out

  • I hope this can help someone. Remember to be kind to everyone, you never know what they're going through. If you have any more coping mechanisms, post them in the comments and I can update the list.

    Keep going, stay safe <3
