In my story, these creatures are produced by a kind of "hive organic" Fillias calls, sent by an entity called Cancry. From the moment that Fillias encrust on the planet, use DNA organic and plant available to transmute and converts them into their extraction tools. These giant beetles are the result of mutation of some insect or animal on the planet. The Fillias create these creatures in order to carbonize the planet with weapons that accelerate the decomposition chemistry, after charring the world, all material is collected and forwarded to Cancry~
