Description
EDIT: 3/26/06 Drawing is now in the private collection of =darthmarlan .---------------
I couldn't sleep. (What's new.) So I asked one of my favorite DA photographers, =darthmarlan , if I could sketch his self portrait "Observed" (it's one of my favorites of his many wonderful photographs). Check it out: [link]
Happily, he said I could, and here is the resulting sketch.
Thank you, Simon; I love this pic. It was so very fun to draw.
2 hours, graphite.

I would be glad to draw you! My reduced charge for dA members is $45 per portrait. To ship the finished portrait to Portugal would be an additional $15 for shipping & handling. ^__^ Let me know if you still want me to draw you, and we can talk about what photos you have available.

Never underestimate your work, Athena, a ref is a ref! whether you are drawing from real life or just a photo the same rules apply...you have to learn that subtle twist that makes a picture alive and not static like a photo....you do pretty ok in this respect ...and remember the credit is always yours artwise!

Well, I can't take much credit for the originality of my composition, since I drew =darthmarlan 's photo and he's the one that set that up, so the originality is all his but I really appreciate the comment about the technique, thank you very much!!

A simply beautiful drawing. You captured the expression cleanly and with grace. the shading is spectacular, and the highlights in the creases of his skin and on his irises really help bring this out of the page. The soft smudge-looking background up the side was perfectly done as well ^^ well done

Thank you much for your kind words, I really can't take too much credit for it because I had a great photo to draw from. I really appreicate your in-depth review, that's wonderful to see on DA, we need more commenters like you!

Hahahaha, ohhh no, you can take as much credit as you like - I use photo references for my drawings as well, so i really do understand the lengths at which you go to to make a piece look... well, like your own interpretation of the original. it is, purely, YOUR art ^^
hehe, yeah... i like to actually voice my opinion, rather than just saying "wow!" because it annoys me when i get meaningless comments, and i hate not being able to answer back plus.... the point of DA is to learn about your art, to learn ways to improve. I hope i helped in some way ^^

Aww you're sweet Thanks for the encouragment! Yes, you certainly did help and I really appreciate your voicing your opinion. It's tough to find time to do that; I literally have hundreds of comments / notes / pieces of art that appear in my "in" box each day; sometimes I only have barely enough time for an uber quick response so to know there are people out there like yourself that take the time to state some more fully fleshed out comments really inspires me to find the time to do it, too ^__^ Your art is passionate and original, and so are you!

haha! awww, thank you - i try And i appreciate that you had a look at my art! most people don't... haha, and i have to admit, i'm jealous of your hundreds of comments
I guess i haven't really gotten the opportunities i'l like on here... oh well, i'll keep at it ^^ and i certainly promise to keep up the in depth comments too

Dont be jealous of my comments, most of them are just "cool" and "awesome" LOL so no worries there. You keep at your great artwork and awesome comments, it will draw serious artists to your page where you'll get real feedback.

Incredibly smooth. What hardness of graphite were you using mostly, out of curiousity? It looks quite soft.
