Jean Grey was born in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York to a troubled yet well-to-do middle-class family. Her father, Dr. John Grey, was a well-respected professor of history at Bard College, and her mother, Elaine Grey, was a restaurant manager. The youngest of 5 siblings, Jean was often doted on by her parents and older siblings. She grew up to be a bright, imaginative girl who often divided her time between reading and playing with her sister and the neighborhood kids, most particularly her best friend next door, Annie Richardson. Despite all of this, she had a very fragile home life that heavily influenced her at a young age. She would quickly learn that the Grey family had a very troubled history. On both her mother's and father's side, there was a long tradition of deviance, substance abuse, and overall underachievement. Her parents tried to stop the trend by focusing on stable careers, but various conflicts kept coming up.
Chief among these conflicts involved Jean's older cousin, Madelyn Pryor. Both her and her mother, Jean's aunt Jennifer Pryor, were accomplished con artists that were wanted for various dealings back in Los Angeles. They frequently requested help from the Greys. Of what little they provided, they often took advantage of. It led to a great deal of strain that took a toll on both the family's resources and their relationship.
From an early age, Jean showed a talent of empathy. Whenever her parents argued over their financial issues, it affected her a great deal, more so than most children. This kind of empathy was written off as a sort of sensitivity and often it was her older sister, Sara Grey, that helped her avoid being overwhelmed. As a result, Jean gained a knack for being selfless and caring to a fault, internalizing everyone's pain into herself. She continued to walk a fine line between being overwhelmed and being empathic. It did not help that her family issues continued to put pressure on her parents. Then, one day, everything took a very tragic turn.
When Jean was 10 years old, she was playing frisbee with Annie just outside her converted farmhouse home late in the afternoon. Her parents were gone to deal with another incident involving Madelyn's incident, and her sister Sara warned the two girls to be wary of cars coming around the blind curve. As Jean threw the toy disc, the wind picked up, carrying out to the road. Annie went to get the frisbee without thinking, and Jean yelled at her to wait and be afraid, but it didn't matter. When coming back from their business with the Pryors, John Grey, coming around the corner, didn't see the young girl until it was too late and Annie didn't see the car at all. The crash killed Annie almost immediately, leaving a shocked and traumatized Jean Grey to feel her best friend die in her arms.
The trauma from the incident caused the first major manifestation of her mutant abilities. As Annie lay dying in her arms, Jean felt it in her mind and from there her vast psychic potential unfolded. She began to actually hear thoughts and sense the feelings of others. This newfound power will easily overwhelm her as Jean also sensed the shock and horror of her parents, siblings, and others who witnessed the incident. This, combined with her trauma, caused the grieving young girl to inadvertently sent out a massive psychic blast that caused a city-wide blackout.
Following Annie's death, Jean was left depressed and withdrawn from the outside world. Her parents and her brothers and sisters, who believed that she just was suffering from psychosis, tried everything to bring her out of her shell after the accident but to no avail. She was too afraid of sensing more pain or being thought of as crazy. Her passion turned to a defensive shell that made her often push people away even when they tried to reach out to her. It only added to her inner anguish, which only exacerbated her mutant abilities even further.
John and Elaine, wracked with concern for their youngest child, sought the help of the best pediatric psychiatrist to help her. The therapy seemed to help Jean, but the therapist was still concerned about her so she recommended medication to allow her to ease her mental pain. The medication only succeeded in worsening Jean's condition. She began to grow more paranoid and emotionally unstable, allowing her telepathy to flair up once and a while. This would also result in her telekinesis manifesting at age 12.
It began in small bursts that were often accompanied with arguments with her parents and siblings. Random objects started levitating and anything that wasn't nailed down started flinging itself across rooms when she was agitated. This led to an incident at her school where a classmate provoked her in a way that caused her to lash out in a telekinetic burst that shattered windows and left several of her peers injured. She was promptly expelled as a result.
Out of options and even fearing their daughter, the Greys were just about to give up there and then until John had a chance encounter with one of his old colleagues from Princeton, Professor Charles Xavier, at a college event convinced him that Jean needed to learn how to control her mutation. Xavier, eventually revealing that he too was a mutant, convinced John to allow him to tutor Jean to help control her abilities.
While Jean’s family was remarkably understanding of the fact that Jean and Xavier were mutants, they knew that society wasn’t, and their concern for Jean’s safety should the school be found out kept them from enrolling Jean at Xavier’s full time. Xavier became a tutor and mentor to Jean, helping her both emotionally and physically with her power. This strong bond created strain between Xavier and John, who began to grow jealous of Jean and Xavier’s father-daughter relationship.
As Jean grew, so did her abilities. Because of this, Xavier installed blocks in her mind so that her powers could grow gradually, rather than allowing her to be overwhelmed by them. Once Jean became stable enough to function on her own, John took a well-paid job at Oxford University, moving his family to London when Jean was 16. While the Greys were finally able to take care of their finances thanks to the move, it and the loss of Jean’s friendships took a toll and Jean’s progress backslid. Xavier begged John to allow Jean to come to the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, but John refused and instead allowed a compromise for Jean to go to Muir Island, a research facility in Scotland that was also specialized in helping mutants. Jean, tired of the constant rivalry between her father and Xavier, was able to convince John that she could have two father figures in her life and it didn’t mean she loved him any less. Realizing Jean still needed Xavier due to the rarity of her abilities, John finally agreed to remote tutoring via Cerebro and eventually got over his qualms with the other Professor.
After finishing high school at Muir Island, Jean, now more stable thanks to her tutoring from the Professor, decided that she wanted to return to the United States to receive her undergraduate degree. Inspired by Muir Island's head researcher, Dr. Moira MacTaggart, Jean entered the pre-med program at Columbia University in New York City. Growing tension between humans and mutants following the infamous "7/15" incident at Dallas, Texas made Jean restless and she began to become more active in finding ways to work toward peace between mutants and humans. Professor Xavier gradually started to remove the mental blocks on her powers, and tried to help quench her desire to make a difference, grooming her to help a select team of fellow mutants within the Mutant Underground to discreetly ferry mutants to safer places all around the world. Her skill in getting mutants out of sometimes very precarious situations earned her the nickname Marvel Girl, a name which stuck, becoming her codename.
Once graduating from Columbia, she soon headed to George Washington University in Washington, DC to enter medical school and keep her pulse on the political hotbed discussion about mutants. Her work with the Mutant Underground continued (but was albeit slowed significantly by the rigors of the program), and once she finished medical school she remained in Washington DC for a couple of years to do that off and on while working on her internship and residency, using various aliases to help her get around and remain hidden.
Jean would officially join the Xavier Institute and, by extension, the X-Men as a result of a mission carried out by the request of Xavier to look into suspicion from one of Jean’s political contacts that a high-tech weapons manufacturing company based in New York called Worthington Industries was supplying anti-mutant groups with the tools they needed to take their "cause" to the next level. She soon discovered this company was also working on contracts with the government to supply the MRD (Mutant Response Division) and other special forces with the means to capture mutants they deemed dangerous. Jean's mission was complicated by her feelings for her unwitting information source, Warren Worthington III, playboy son of the company's owner. Having obtained some information while on a date with Warren, Jean's conscience got the better of her and she eventually confessed. To her surprise, Warren not only agreed to help her with the investigation, but revealed his own mutant status and eventually moved into the mansion.
The relationship was short-lived, with Jean finding out through gossip that Warren was still seeing other people. Her adjustment to living at the X-Mansion was difficult as well, but she stayed strong to train in the classroom and with the early team under the guidance of John Proudstar. She also developing a strong friendship with Scott Summers, who helped her channel her passion into the X-Men. Along the way, she shared that passion to the rest of the Institute, always seen reaching out and counseling new students about her powers, such as Bobby Drake, Kitty Pryde, Rogue, and the New Mutants. She would also play a role in recruiting Wolverine, who she also ended up dating for a while. Eventually, she settled into a romantic relationship with her longtime friend, Scott Summers, although she retained some feelings for Wolverine, which has caused some tension between the two men. She feels some level of guilt over this but tries to hide it. In that time and through these many tribulations, the X-Men grew and Jean Grey became one of the most dedicated members of the team that inspired others with her passion.

Jean Grey is all about passion. She's friendly, outgoing, and studious. She's very encouraging and insightful with her teammates and is easily one of the most level-headed, although at times she can become emotional. This in many ways makes her the emotional core of the X-Men. She best embodies the compassion they stand for, reaching out to those who were confused and scared just like she was growing up. She is so compassionate, she will reach out to those who may seem beyond hope to the rest of the world.
The design of Marvel Girl is mostly based off of her late 60s-early 70s costume, along with a couple aspects of the 90s Phoenix costume. To make it stand out, I gave Jean the jacket her time-displaced counterpart wore in X-Men Blue. I also gave the proper Phoenix sash. She also got freckles and curly hair to make her cuter.
As for Phoenix/Dark Phoenix/White Phoenix, she'll be definitely coming in separate entries.
I hope you guys like it.
