No figure in the history of the Robotech Wars and the events that came before generates more power and mysticism than that of the beings who are only known by their titles "Regent" and "Regent." Their true names forever lost to the annals of time and space, together they are the Supreme Leaders of the Invid Regency and parents of the entirety of the Invid race.
On the original Invid Cradleworld thousands of years ago, the Invid Hives lived under the peaceful reign of their monarchy, the co-heads would be given the royal positions of Regent and Regess. Together, these two rulers acted as a harmonious, controlling intelligence that was telepathically and empathically linked to all of her children thanks to their symbiotic connections with the Flower of Life and the myriad energy source that it produced known as Protoculture. Their thoughts, feelings, and visions could be instantly transmitted to all the Invid of the world. Indeed, the other Invid were almost extensions of their Regent and Regess. So connected with their people that the rulers each feels the death of their subjects, even if it happens hundreds of thousands of miles away. Each Invid death is painful. Each death siphoned a little of their combined energies away. If the Regent and Regess dies from old age or decides to step down, their oldest child and their chosen spouse would be given the responsibility as the new Regent and Regess.
For eons, the Invid lived in peaceful harmony, their way of life simple. Then, on one fateful day, a race of beings forever known in Invid folklore as the fabled and dreaded "Children of the Shadow" came to the Invid Cradleworld. It is unknown who the Children of the Shadow are or where they came from. All we know is that for some reason they feared the Invid's mastery over the vast powers of Protoculture, which held tremendous amounts of power. In response, the Children of the Shadow unleashed weapons of mass destruction that immediately turned the Cradleworld and its space colonies into uninhabitable wastelands, killing thousands, if not millions, of innocent Invid. In order to escape the cataclysm, the Regent and Regess at the time directed all of the surviving Invid to temporarily shed their physical forms and merge with their supply of Protoculture to become a singular being that left their home galaxy in search of a new world away from the Children of the Shadow's notice. After centuries of searching, they finally made their new home on a remote planet in the distant Tzuptum star system of the Large Magellanic Cloud that they named Optera. Despite the survival of their race, much of the Invid's culture and civilization was lost in the destruction of their original homeworld, culminating in a long devolution into tribalism with little to no memory of their once prosperous life. The Regent/Regess lineage, who still remembered and passed down the memories of the old Cradleworld, discovered evidence of an ancient alien civilization that once visited Optera eons ago. From what they managed to savage from the old remains, they learned tales of how a mysterious messiah-like being that they named "the Benefactor" would visit other worlds and spread enlightenment across the universe in order to ensure tranquility for other alien races. Through these tales, the Invid held hope that one day, the Benefactor would come to their time of need and bring their race back to its former glory.
In Earth year 1343 A.D., that opportunity seemingly came in the form of a race of humanoids called the Tirolians, merchants who created an intergalactic monopoly by offering aid to less advanced civilizations in exchange for specific materials and resources. Around this time, Tirol began to suffer from a massive energy crisis shortly after severing their trade agreement with their former long-time ally, Karbarra. To solve the energy crisis, the Tirolian Interstellar Republic launched a space exploration program with hundreds of survey ships sent out across the galaxy in search of suitable alternate energy resources. Soon, one of these survey ships would land on Optera.
The discovery of Optera was a disappointment to the Tirolians because the Invid appeared to be a race of simpletons. However, never to be one not to explore and exploit all possibilities, the Tirolians left a team of scientists to see if this world was of any value to them. The scientific team was led by a brilliant and compassionate Tirolian scientist named Zor Derelda. In the months that followed, Zor befriended the current Regent and Regess, who shared many of their secrets as they naively believed that Zor was a reincarnation of the revered Benefactor. As a sign of good faith, the Regent and Regess sent their eldest daughter, the Crown Princess, as their ambassador to the Tirolians. In his conservations with the Crown Princess, Zor discovered the unusual link between the Invid and the Flower of Life. Blinded by naivety and by the excitement of the wondrous plant, Zor developed a way in which the Tirolians could harness its energies. A shockingly simple process (to him) to create what he called "organic fusion." Zor also pioneered the mechanics of the Tirolians' bio-engineering through Protoculture, creating what would be known as Robotechnology. The young scientist reveled in the euphoria of his discoveries. He thought to himself that he was about to bring as his excitement was emphatically transmitted to the Invid Crown Princess, and so she felt his joy. Unknown to Zor, the Princess had discovered new feelings, new thoughts, and new visions through him. Feelings she had never known (one might call love). She soared along with his intense love of life, excitement, and happiness.
After Zor's departure from Optera, the Invid entered an age of technological advancement thanks to their new alliance with Tirol. With Tirolian technology and knowledge of other races and cultures given to them in exchange for samples of the Flower of Life, the entire Invid race had undergone a species-wide metamorphosis as they began to hyper-evolve to a humanoid form similar to the Tirolians and even began to follow a facsimile of Tirolian culture in honor of Zor. However, there were two Invid who went through the most change due to this phenomenon brought by Zor's arrival. The first was the Royal Advisor to the Regent and Regess. He was immediately compelled by an insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge since he learned of knowledge of the wider universe from Zor, self-assured that by amassing enough information from the raiments of civilization, he could become something more than what he already was. The second was the Crown Princess, who had taken a humanoid form similar to a Tirolian female due to her telepathic union with Zor in the past, she was infused with the undeniable desire to become something that she was not and could never hope to be--human.
When Zor returned to his home planet, Tirol, with his discoveries, his superiors were equally ecstatic about the advent of Protoculture and Robotechnology as the Tirolians entered a new golden age. However, there were power-hungry zealots and fanatics who believed that this new power would give them the advantage to crush all their enemies and cement their race as the dominant power in the cosmos. These people would become who we now know as the Robotech Masters, and they overthrew the Tirolian Interstellar Republic, quickly establishing a Robotech Empire that they declared would last for a hundred thousand years and bring the universe to its knees.
As Zor's new masters hatched their evil schemes, he continued his research, discovering more and more. When the Tirolians finally returned to Optera, they were greeted as friends, perhaps as demigods. Zor proudly gave lectures on his many theories and unveiled his greatest invention--a device known as the Protoculture Matrix, which could produce seemingly infinite amounts of Protoculture to power their technology, just as long as it was regularly replenished by large amounts of heavy water from the oceans of Tirol and its space colonies. Young Zor was undoubtedly the most brilliant mind in the universe.
Amid the accolades, the Robotech Masters instructed Zor to gather up a vast supply of Flower of Life seeds for immediate use. As he did this, members of the Invid Royal Hive told him that others in his world were also collecting the life-giving seeds. The Royal Advisor greatly distrusted the Tirolians as he didn't believe that Zor was the reincarnation of the so-called Benefactor and believed that his rulers' naive beliefs would result in the Invid's downfall, if the Tirolians ever turned out to be like the Children of the Shadow. As for the Crown Princess, she defended Zor due to a growing romantic attraction towards him following their past union in spite of her wariness about everything, but Zor calmed and assured her that all was right and that such a treasure must be shared with the universe and not hoarded by one race. The Invid remained faithful but deferred to Zor's wisdom and friendship.
With sufficient seeds collected and stored within Zor's original Protoculture Matrix and the lesser matrixes, the Robotech Masters moved to ensure their immortality and domination over the universe. (Ironically, it would seal their doom and create a new nightmare to ravage the cosmos.) They began the immediate and complete defoliation of Optera. The Robotech Masters could not afford to let any other race possess Protoculture, even these apparently harmless people. Their first mistake was greed. Their second mistake was the defoliation of the entire planet, for the Flower of Life could grow nowhere else. A dilemma that the Masters would discover later. Their third mistake was rooted in their arrogance, which blinded them to the tremendous power of the Invid.
Zor and the Invid alike were horrified! Zor could not believe the Robotech Masters would do such a heinous act. His reclusive years as a scientist sheltered him from the cruelty of the Robotech Masters. Now his eyes were opened, but too late. His pleas for them to stop were ignored. His impassioned speeches about sharing the wondrous discoveries (at no charge) were received with laughter. At that moment, Zor's world crumbled. His naivety had condemned innocent people. He was helpless to stop the defoliation of the Invid homeworld, but he was not entirely powerless. In a small way, he could help rectify the carnage he had inspired, no matter how long it took him. Back alone in his laboratory in Tirol's capital city of Tiresia, he furiously set to work.
Meanwhile, Optera was racked by a catastrophic change. The Zentraedi harvesters sent down by the Robotech Masters were especially monstrous as their super-powerful defoliants would destroy all plant life. In response to this, many of the Invid Hives took up arms to defend their homeworld, only to be easily slaughtered by the superior weapons of the Zentraedi. During the pacification of Optera, many Invid were killed in this act of terror, including the Regent and Regess who attempted to reason with the Zentraedi commanders, only to be laughed at before getting gunned down. The Crown Princess felt the deaths of her parents and many of their fellow Invid at once through her telepathy and, in her grief and anger, unleashed a massive psychic scream that echoed throughout the entire planet. Pained by the Princess' telepathic outrage, the Zentraedi harvesters were forced to leave Optera, leaving behind a small percentage of the Flower of Life which gave the Invid some sustenance that would last for a century. But the deed was done. The Zentraedi's defoliation methods was so deadly that no vegetation would grow on the planet's surface for the next 10,000 years. Yet the Invid people would be unharmed, just left to die of starvation. And so it would have been if the Invid were the helpless innocents the Robotech Masters believed them to be. Instead, another equally devastating change was taking place inside the many hives. The Invid only wished to recreate their fallen civilization that was lost to them by the Children of the Shadow long ago, but now everything they've built for was now destroyed by whom they once saw allies. Consumed with vengeance, the Invid race was slowly but surely transformed into a combat force to crush the despoilers of their world and culture. The Royal Advisor and the Crown Princess rose to the position of Regent and Regess, deciding to lead their people in their new quest to rebuild and preserve their civilization by destroying the ones responsible for the theft of their Flowers of Life. To the Robotech Masters' surprise, in the Earth year 1450 A.D., a lethal force of mechanized Invid shocktroopers and hive fleets suddenly appeared to ravage outlying Tirolian colony worlds. The battle was fierce and terrible with the Masters and their Zentraedi slaves emerging victorious, but the war was far from over.
So began the Protogen Wars between the Tirolian Robotech Mercantile Empire and the Invid Regency, stretching across the centuries. Hundreds of millions of Tirolians, Zentraedi, and Invid would perish in battle, and along with them entire worlds of innocents who were either coerced into using Protoculture provided by the heartless Robotech Masters or were just unlucky to be caught in the crossfire at the time. The Invid scouts scoured the territory of the Robotech Empire, searching for the essence of the Flower of Life. Whenever "its" presence was found, the Regency was immediately alerted. A terrible swarm of scouts, armored scouts, shock troopers, pincers, and later, the dreaded inorganics would swarm over the world, collecting the Protoculture and obliterating the population. Soon, the war reached a stalemate that lasted for centuries until the Robotech Masters' Protoculture reserves began to run dangerously low. Things became worse when Zor, the father of Robotechnology who was the only person in the universe who could recreate Protoculture for the Masters, was killed in an Invid ambush during the war's later battles in Earth year 1999 A.D. In his dying breath, Zor implemented his last desperate plan to make right this terrible wrong. His flagship, the new prototype super space battlefortress Macross, suddenly bursts to life and vanished as it made its jump into hyperspace. With it, a vast reserve of precious Protoculture, unprocessed seeds placed in suspended animation within his original Protoculture Matrix, which was hidden somewhere in the ship's deepest recesses.
After eons of endless fighting, the Regess grew tired of the constant battle. Instead, she suggested finding a new homeworld for the Invid where they could regrow their Flower of Life and could again live in peace. However, the Regent was a being of passion. Hellbent on revenge for the thief of his people's life source, he would not accept anything but the complete destruction of the Robotech Masters. Already, the Regent had enslaved several worlds that were once part of Tirolian space under his rule. His goal, like the Robotech Masters', became one of intergalactic conquest and domination to ensure that the Invid would remain the superior civilization over all others, as part of a twisted dream to preserve his race and their culture. So, the Invid Regency became divided; half was ruled by the Regess, and the other was ruled by the Regent. Over the decades, the rift between the two would cause a schism that would send them to two entirely different destinies. The Regess would pursue "enlightened evolution" and ultimately, follow the trail of Zor's battlefortress to Earth and beyond. The Regent would finally find and ravage the Robotech Masters' homeworld of Tirol. There, he would encounter the allied forces of the Robotech Expeditionary Forces led by the indomitable Rick Yamada Hunter and the Sentinels.
