Unfortunately, Spike wasn't available. I think Twilight, being Equestria's to Sherlock Holmes, was called upon to investigate a very difficult case of some sort and she dragged him along as her Dr. Watson. Spike had to leave Rarity all alone on what would have been their second Valentine's day together. There's a follow up to this floating around where she receives flowers. I bet he sent them with a note saying he would back in time for them to spend the evening together.

Why did you choose Rarity for this? Spike would be perfectly willing to spend Valentin's Day with her XD I can see maybe Cheerilee being a better candidate based on what she said about not having a special somepony last season.

Maybe. But Pinkie had kinda already filled the Dr. Watson position in Mmmystery Express. And since when has Spike been a regular companion on Twilight's missions? The only one he directly participated in was saving the Crystal Empire from Sombra. He's just been kinda there for all the others with no big role to play, if, indeed, we see much of him at all.

Spike is Twilight's sidekick and has been a companion on many cases. Pinkie was more like Inspector Clouseau, but Spike frequently fills the role of Watson as Conan Doyle intended him.
