My life is one fraught with difficulty- I live in the colony set out for those of us referred to as “un-human”. We are called that because we were once human, but we became something else through the use of experimentation; we were told it was for “science”. They never told us we would spend the rest of our lives in a small colony without contact to the outside world or anyone we knew.

My first memory as a changeling (as we prefer to call ourselves) was when I awoke in my new house. It was a simple thing, three rooms made of wood and a deck in the back. There was food in my pantry, all meat and all dried. There was also a fishing rod and a knife. I walked out and began my new life.

I still see that place sometimes, but now it’s from the home I had my people build. The one on the top of the flat mountain, a palace made entirely of polished coral. I have changed a little since the time I awoke to find myself in the small wooden house. I now accept the fact that I am no longer human, but rather something else entirely. I accept that I have changed mind and body; that I am no longer the person I was in any way. The person I was before died on an operating slab.

I had signed up for it because I thought it would benefit my country in the war. It may have, but I never found out. They took me into the operating room, a dark place coated in blood, and tied me to the large stone table. They drew strange patterns around me in a black substance that smelled of copper. Then my world became pain, and I blacked out.

Now I oversee my kingdom, my people content. They all cry for vengeance, but I tell them that they must have forgiveness. They need not strike back at those that did this to them, but live their lives in happiness to spite the ideals that caused them such pain. Thus I live, thus I serve. I have no regrets, fate brought me to this place for a reason. I wish only to discover the reason.
