Yeah. He is a really horrible man. But keep in mind: This is Ryuu telling the story, and his VEIW on him... He didn't know James well, so this is what he sees him as, and we see him though his eyes.
Cause you'll notice, when Hidan has his dream.... James looks completely demented, because that's what Hidan sees him as.
Ryuu sees James as an ass. So therefore, he is an ass.
Celia loves him for reasons unknown. there's probably a side of him she saw that Ryuu never saw for himself. We will hear about this next page, but we will never see this side of James for ourselfs, because I don't want the readers to have any sympathy for this guy. I hate him. >_>
