This is basically how I do my sprite recolouring, as well as how to do standard shades. It's simple, it's easy... and it takes a heck of a lot of time when you're doing an entire sprite sheet. But it's all I got.

And yes, stretching it usually does distort the quality of the sprite, but that didn't happen for the Mario and Luigi sprites I used. Woohoo!
