Description
Marker and Photoshop - July 2016This is a redo from a February 2016 drawing of mine.
This time I draw him a little bigger and have him burst out of the background. I added some references to the legend, like for instance the shadow of the hound dog behind him, the one that he will kill, gaining his new name in the process as Cú-Chulainn (=Culann's hound). I also added crows on the right of the image to refer to the morrigan, who at the very end of his life when he is wounded in battle took that appearance and perched on his shoulder, proving life has left him although he was still standing.
His hair has been changed to ginger turning to red at the end of his curls because he was supposed to have multiple colours in his hair and some versions of the legend tell that his hair was dripping blood when he was in deep anger.
At last, I changed the colours of his clothing. Red being associated with power, it seemed more appropriate for the tunic.
A little bit more about the inspiration: Cú Chulainn is an ancient Irish hero warrior who - so the legend says - was gifted with superhuman strength, speed and skill. Born Sétanta, he gained his better-known name at the age of 7, after killing Culann's fierce guard-dog by driving a sliotar (hurling ball) down its throat with his hurley in self-defense. He offered the owner to take the dog's place until a replacement could be reared. Since then he was named Cú Chulainn meaning "Culann's Hound".
Cuchulainn's character is a symbol of courage, strength and dedication.
