Description
They gathered on the field.
Mist poured from the low grey ceiling of a sky,
emerald grass muted to the green-grey colour
of a hospital wall.
By silent agreement, keeping still
except for the unconscious movement
of their black-clad feet.
(Back and forth, swish and flick).
until they had to move.
They assembled in formation: three in the middle, three in the front, one behind
and at the muffled whine of a whistle
took off in an explosion of movement,
a plan at the bottom of it, but they’re moving on instinct now:
run here, shuffle back, feet one-behind-the-other, jump over a rough patch
dodge the first threat, slam into the second.
And through the whole time, the unconscious movement of their black-clad feet
go back and forth, swish and flick.
