If you go to the movies
it’s almost certain that you’ll see
a couple or two.
They might be young, or old, or gay, or straight.
But some things are always the same.
One of them will try and pay for everything
and the other will make them keep their money.
One will want to hold hands, or kiss
or one will just want to see the movie.
And not last night
but two nights before
we filled the empty place for a couple
in a nearby theater.
As dates go, I’m sure the other people there
thought it was bad:
You tried to pay for everything and ran out of money,
I ran into a boy from church who thought I was staying home,
your siblings were there, wheels three and four.
But you know?
I thought it was perfect.
