You visited me for four days this week
and during that time
we snuck around the world.
just staying within the bounds of friends.
Laying on the same bed as we laughed along
with the anime you played
as my father thought we were asleep
Sudden tight hugs neither of us could explain or justify
but to the casual observer watching in public
we were friends.
Only if you watched us alone
would you start to see signs that we cared.
When we sat on the roof and watched the summer stars
when we would wrestle in the deep end of the pool-
you were stronger, but I had no sense of boundaries.
Just once did we act this way in public
the last night, at dinner with some friends.
You slept on the couch, head in my lap, holding my hand
until I woke you to leave.
On the walk back-me, you, my sister
we held hands in the dark.
And that night
you stayed up until two
checking to see if I was sleeping okay.
