Description

She was once a simple stage performer going from town to town telling a story of a man, a fox in exchange for a meager living.  In her travels, on the side of a road in a forest clearing, she came across a curious discarded lantern that immediately enthralled her.  She need to have it.  As soon as she grasped its handle, the lantern started to radiate a comforting glow, enveloping her and the surrounding trees.  Setting back on the road with her new treasure, she felt at ease for the first time in a very long time.  Every night from then on she would fall asleep to its glow, allowing its warmth and glow to clear her mind of the days troubles.  Eventually, little by little, the lantern washed away everything from her, leaving only her masks of a man and a fox.

There are stories of a traveling performer that tells a story of a man, a fox and a flock of sheep.  Those that witness it are often moved to tears, profoundly changed forever.  When the performer moves on, people tend to vanish, washed away by the simple luminescence of a curious lantern, and a performer grows her collection of masks.

Story inspired by strong lighting.  I like doing high contrast pictures with a single defined light source, so I thought it would be interesting to make a story around one.  From an art perspective, its interesting to see how very strong light can essentially erase parts of a subject as it gets closer.  When it gets so close that the features are just white streaks, I like to think that the person becomes just a husk.

1. Do you have a backstory when you create an original character?

I typically start with a story when I'm making a character.  It's usually easier to design when I know what their personality and circumstances are like.

2. How do you think you would handle a meteoric rise to fame?

Poorly.  I need to privacy and I don't think being recognized just by going in public would be good in the long run.

3. What are your favorite tools to use in the creative process?

I tend to do my work digitally these days, so my computer and tablet.  Though I'm happy to ideate with paper and pencil too.
