Description DAY 73

25 years ago on this day, Howard Ashman, lyricist for Little Shop of Horrors, Smile, Little Mermaid and Beauty & the Beast passed away because of AIDS. In honor of that, today's picture is of the last project that he worked on (Disney and overall): Aladdin.
Coming right at the heels of Beauty & the Beast, there was a lot of pressure for this movie. Would it be as successful or not? It most certainly was! The story is very simple (sort of a liar revealed story done right), but it has a lot to it. It has a different feel as opposed to the past 3 Renaissance films. It's more comedic, self-aware, modern-isms (at least, 90s modern-isms) and almost a parody; but it works perfectly. Besides, what's wrong with some self-awareness? The animation is really fantastic, from the twisted no-straight-line backgrounds, the active character animation, its wonderful and clever color palette scheme and the pretty good use of CGI. The characters are all wonderful, from relateable situations to pitch-perfect voice-acting. (Of course, Robin Williams being in this movie is what sparked the "let's put gigantic name actors in 'kids' animated films!") The songs are a lot of fun, with a nice jazzy feel to them and it being 50% Howard, 50% Tim Rice, 100% Alan Menkin. Reading/seeing a lot of the deleted concepts and alternate stories they had are really interesting. In fact, a lot of the stuff would've been great to see overall. Good thing they were resurfaced for the Broadway show. To all you who haven't seen it, I don't think you quite realize what Disney's got here! So, why don't you just ruminate whilst eliminating these Arabian possibilities! You ain't nevah seen a flick like this!

That's one of my favorite animated cartoons of all time. I miss Robin Williams.
