Description
When I took this shot there were a lot of things going though my head, like why does this kid have dirt all over his face, why is he standing there staring into space as if im not there, and where can I get one of those (Lets) Go!!! doremon shirt? Needless to say the more I look at this shot the more questions I have about it. The kid in the background doing his homework just looked at him as he stood there not moving or anything. This shot really makes me wonder about everything that led up to this scene, this little boy is such an enigmaβ¦
Yashica GSN, 45mm f1.7 Yashinon lens, Ilford XP2 shot at 320.

i just want to pick up the younger child and hold him, that what his expression inspires in me, though if he was austistic, like some people we previously suggesting, i doubt that would be such a good idea.

It brings a reaction of worry or wanting to help this young person.
The table is stone? cement?

the table was stone, the same type of hand chizzled stones that made the path going for kilometers up into the countryside

The wonder in you is mainly
"How can you manage to be in this situations, ready with a camera?"
I'm jealous!
Really, the moment of this shot should be very short, but you succeed to catch it up! And in what a way!
Probably the boy was been insulted from the big one, and now is shhowing his disappointment in this way. It's happening to my two sons also.

I always carry a camera around with me, never know when you are going to need one. Ususaly a rangefinder, they are small and fit well in the bag.
I kind of wish I knew more about what was going on in this scene but its just one of those shots that ya got to think about and will maybe never know everything about...

I thought that was dried blood / scabbing on his face. His expression does beg the question..
After reading your description I started to see whiskers on his face, though I cancelled that out because the lines on one side of his mouth are bigger than the other side.
Where was this place?

Are you sure the kid in the back didnt beat him up or anything, the dirt in the photo looks more like blood to me... or was it YOU!??
Leaving joke aside, I think this is an amazing photograph, very powerful...and yes, full of enigma!

i feel bad for this kid he seems sick. his hair doesnt seem to be growing in well. he might be autistic.

Indeed, I agree with a lot of the comments here. It's kind of disturbing since the shot is in black and white... I almost mistakened it as blood.

great expression and mood, I love this one.
I would have shot from one step to the right, maybe, giving more space in front of the in-focus-boy and less space to the right, behind the not-in-focus one... but maybe from that angle there was no attractive background? Who can tell?
