He should've bought the Deluxe version, as it has all characters [Excluding Golden Mario] and stages unlocked with some added content, as he would've had to buy the DLC to get the animal crossing characters, link, and more for the original...
Then again, that's just what I would do if I were in Sonic's shoes, or if the Switch game case models ever came to be
