Description
RAPTOR ATTACK!!An experiment from a year ago, trying to draw a realistic design using the visual elements of an art style traditional to many native groups along the Northwest Coast of North America, such as the Tlingit and the Haida. Obviously, this velociraptor is not traditional.
I've been reluctant to post this drawing, for that very reason. I know there are a lot of people with strong feelings about outsiders using this art style outside of its traditional context. It is a complicated situation. I've had a number of conversations with people who are as close to the 'inside' as I could find, some of which you may read here: [link] [link]
At this point, I am ready to put this out there, as a humble experiment, simply to see how people react and what people think of my approach. If this turns out to be a mistake, I will welcome the suffering brought down upon myself and do my best to learn from the experience. Let's see what happens.
Pen and colored pencil.
This is an example of a naturalistic formline design, where the silhouette more or less matches that of the actual animal.
If you like this artwork, and you want to learn more about the cultural context in which the style was developed, please see the excellent book A Story as Sharp as Knife : The Classical Haida Mythtellers and Their World by Robert Bringhurst. I've written a review of it, which you can read here: [link]
Enjoy!

I had a feeling it was based off of Haida art! :'D -can recognise her cultur's art now~!-
This is just awesome. I so want to do something like this, but basically with a gryphon in the Haida art style.
Definite fave~!

Thank you! Please, keep me posted on any art you do in this style. Let me know if you have any questions about it, or want feedback.
There are a lot of rules to learn, and if you are serious about learning to draw in this style, I would strongly recommend picking up a copy of Bill Holm's book Northwest Coast Indian Art: An Analysis of Form .
After you have an understanding of the basics, or even before, it would be very beneficial to try copying as many existing designs as you can, drawing them by looking at the design, without tracing directly. If you need help finding good examples, there are plenty I can give you.
And before you post any of your art, be sure to read these guidelines, kindly provided by a Haida artist here on deviantART: [link]
I'm here to help. I hope you enjoy the journey.

I will. ^^
Will do, though I'm sure I'll learn a lot when I finally get to do to the Queen Charlottes. Aaah, I'm so excited for that day. ;u;
Hah, no worries about that, my mother has plenty of Haida art hanging up in our house.
Thank you so much for the tips. cx

Very nice work.
I really like how you used the coloring the way you did, and the "Block-style" together so well. All in all the whole feeling of the picture is damn near perfect, if it even isn't.
Favorite for sure, and suggesting you experiment more with this!

Thanks! Credit for the coloring and the style goes to, well, the many native artists along the Pacific Northwest coast who developed it over hundreds of years. I did choose to color in blue where I could have left it white, and I think that was a good choice.
I will experiment more with the style, though I'll focus on abstract designs for a while. Once I get better with those I can probably do a better job with the representative designs as well.

Good to hear! It's always nice seeing some new/unusual styles developing. I'll be following that development for sure.

Thank you. I like the way the drawing seems to capture the muscular energy of the velociraptor in the tension and flow of the formline shapes. I'm pleased with how it turned out.

Thank you. The velociraptor is a dinosaur that has always been close to my heart, and I feel that I've finally done justice to the energy and power of the creature with this piece. My kindergarten self would be proud.
And as a general announcement to anyone who might be hoping to make this into an actual tattoo, remember to ask first. Please don't use it without my permission.

wouldn't dream of using without permission. you should do more work like this and take it to your local tattoo shop and sell it as "Flash" art. I bet they'd love to have it!
Again, Well done.
