Taric watched Almeda watch as he tore a massive bite from the haunch of salted pork that sat propped comfortably against the rising hills of his plump chest, slurping up the savoury juices as he swallowed so that he could return again for another mouthful. In a large basket at his bedside stood several bones of varying sizes -perhaps enough to build a lackluster chimera of some sort- all having been picked clean by the voracious gato within the past half hour. Grinning at his sister over the intrusive slope of his colossal belly, the overly-engorged cat wiped his mouth and cocked an expectant brow. She had been midway through saying something before he’d belched a few times and thrown her off track, and Taric felt slightly bad for having done so. She was trying to help, after all.
“…Please, let’s focus for a moment.” Despite the silver-furred woman’s evident frustration and unease, Almeda’s tone of voice always inhabited a state of impressive calm. It tended to be the only voice to which Taric paid consistent attention… well, semi-consistent, anyway. “Did you hear what I was saying about going to see the chaos elemental?”
“Yeah… yeah,” Taric nodded, then dug back into the ham with persisting vigour. Admittedly, despite the objectively horrifying existence he had entered into since returning from the expedition, he felt a warmth that -against all odds- had kept him perfectly at ease… jolly, even, if one wished to be funny about it. He supposed it was best not to look too much into his perpetual good mood, and in fact had done quite a good job of not looking into it so far; he’d been far too busy eating.
“So you heard that the chaos elemental lives in a remote mountain cave?” Almeda continued, biting back her clear skepticism. “Because that’s what I’m hung up on right now.”
“How so?” Taric burped, then yanked the rest of the ham off the bone before starting to gnaw gently at what scraps remained.
“We’ll likely have to hire a powerful aerial escort,” his sister persisted over his continued display of vulgarity. “And by likely, I mean almost certainly, since I don’t see how we’ll be able to haul your fat ass all the way there on foot.”
“What? So let’s just borrow some cloudsteeds,” Taric suggested, grunting as he wiggled his pudgy mitt in the direction of the remaining slab of uneaten food. The rest was packed snugly into the sheer bed-burdening mass of his immense gut, which he thumped appreciatively with his free paw as he snagged the elusive morsel by the bone. Almeda had pulled some impressive strings with her ensemble of useful connections to get her vastly widening sibling a steady diet of decently good meats, as he tended to eat whatever was in reach if he got hungry enough. He didn’t like it either, but the act was largely out of his control; the gnawing sensation of an empty stomach stirred an uncanny revulsion within him, as though the organ were lurching repeatedly in protest. As long as it was filled, all was well, and Taric knew that he would be alright with Almeda’s great wealth and influence at his back. He of course had his own connections, but Almeda had gently suggested that it might be best not to let word of his present condition spread just yet. He had, after all, gained a quarter of a tonne over the span of barely two weeks- tripling his weight and showing no sign of slowing down. The weight gain was inevitable as it was bizarrely enjoyable, though Taric kept that latter bit strictly to himself. Better to get fat than to go mad from whatever unnatural starvation had beset the gato boy. Even Almeda agreed there.
“Right, we could borrow cloudsteeds…” Almeda hummed, having maintained eye contact with her brother throughout his nonstop feasting. “That isn’t my area of expertise… Could a cloudsteed hold someone as heavy as you?” For the first time since she had arrived that day, she broke into a smile. “Perhaps we could procure you a chariot?”
“Not sure if they have any of those laying around Skycastle,” Taric hummed in return, hanging in a rare moment of distraction from his food. “They’re not really in fashion anymore… but worth a shot.”
“Yes, worth a shot,” Almeda agreed, forcing a nod of encouragement as her smile settled back down again. “Let’s keep brainstorming. If we can get something big enough to fly you there, I’m sure the chaos elemental can cure your gluttony.”
“Nh?” The word jabbed at him like the previous thousand had not. “…Gluttony?”
“Ha ha, I know, right? What gluttony?” The straightfacedness of Almeda’s reply momentarily delayed Taric from registering its lurking satire. “Be serious, Taric! If we don’t cure you soon, I-“ With an abrupt rattle of her head, Almeda halted her statement and exhaled. “We’ll be lucky to get you there on a chariot as is… But that isn’t helpful. Sorry.”
“Bhuaaaaaaaaaaaarp-“ Taric replied, still grinning as he tossed aside the last barren bone- its former prize now vanished. “The air knights will figure something out. Just go chat up Zephryn for an hour and-“
“That’s alright, I did that already,” Almeda’s swift reply appeared to surprise even herself, and she giggled despite herself as her tense manner dissipated somewhat. “He’s very lovely of course, praise Zephryn, just… longwinded, as they do say.” At this, the supple gato rose and turned her attention to the full basket by the bed- ignoring the loud, constant churning of Taric’s delighted belly near her head as she bent near. “I’ll let you get some rest. No eating while I’m not around, ok? Not unless it’s your food and you didn’t pay for it.” Smirking a bit at the absurdity of her directions, Almeda rose to her full, imposing height once again, with her arms wrapped carefully around the heavy basket- dodging the protruding bones with a gentle tilt of her cheek. “I’ll call in some favours… See what we can get.”
“Mmm…” Taric swallowed a shuddering burp, gasped, and sat up a bit with an ungraceful slosh. “Ok, have fun~” He purred contentedly at the exasperated glare his sister threw him, then added. “You’re the best, you know!”
“Uh huh,” Meda replied with a nod as she slipped out the door to her brother’s flat, gripping the doorhandle with her tail and slamming it shut behind her.
