In the first chapter , Tiamat had found a chipped off bone after she had returned the rock to where it naturally gravitated. It was not a short journey, but she eventually found the origin of the chipped bone, a once young unfortunate whale. More seems to be missing from this skeleton, so she reckons its fall must have happened quite some time ago. Tiamat takes a moment to realize that she was alive as an esk when this whale was alive, and that she was alive well before it ever lived, and that now this whale has passed on for so long. Where did its life essence go, did it perchance become an esk, or not? Immortality can be a double edged sword.
Amidst the rubble, she draws the attention of a giant isopod. It seems lost and lonely, and signals to Tiamat that it needs help finding where it needs to go.
