Description
The Icarim are a race of specialized shapeshifters and the dominant life form of Araad. Their natural shapes are capable of precise and high speed flight, and the six subspecies are named and ordered according to their varying levels of aerial skill. Sohl, a hybrid of the more terrestrial Karag and the largely airborne Sahar breeds, is a good example of the species' overall physical traits. Culturally and behaviorally, however, he is one of the worst representatives imaginable, and is proof why it's important to rehabilitate animals young and with minimal human contact. He has strongly imprinted on humans.

A predatory breed, Icarim are proud and territorial as a rule. These traits often translate to a fierce protective instinct over an area or individual, and even submissive personalities like Sohl tend to "claim" objects or people under their care. They readily recognize and respect this same strength in others, regardless of species, and favor individuals and even prey displaying such traits. This has saved many a defiant human from ending up as a snack.

Lacking the dexterity for written language, they have a very nuanced tongue and a strong oral storytelling culture. Groups sing across huge distances to keep in contact or to warn away, and even conflicts begin with long-winded boasts of deed and lineage. Icarim names are themselves a story, each summing up the dominant traits or feats of the individual. As humans, they tend to be fantastic singers.
