“How fatefully romantic, that you will watch her die tonight. Wouldn’t you agree? You won’t take the shot, you can’t, because you aren’t the killer you used to be.”
The blood boiled beneath my skin as I focused on the exact mark where I had to strike.
“NO!” my voice thundered across the room in a final attempt to reject my decision. Eyes glowing with fiery rage, I felt my self-restraint, my promise, and my conscience viciously tearing in two. And when I met Abel’s demonic smile it happened.
I closed my eyes and raised my regretful weapon. Abel was shocked. In the darkness I felt Audrey watching. I squeezed the trigger and unleashed death. The world went silent. Everything in my body shrieked in disbelief. A tiny brass shell emerged from cold black steel and a streak of fire and metal hurtled towards them. It penetrated with thunderous force through Audrey’s heart, and exploded out of his. Abel fell backwards and released her, the hole in his chest still smoldering, left a tiny trail of smoke across the air.
It was getting harder to breathe, and I'm pretty sure one of my lungs just collapsed.
Audrey never took her eyes off me, trusting me, believing in words I had previously said. Unable to move, I watched Audrey’s trembling legs give from beneath and bring her to her knees. Memories hit me quickly in white flashes.“I brought you nothing but pain and terror,” I hoarsely whispered, “our time together was a slow and cruel death, I tried, and despite my defiance, fate brought my hand to your throat.” Her stare turned desperate and confused, piercing, as if she were reaching across the floor through my eyes. A pair of tears emerged and I thought she would scream, I thought she would curse my name; instead her brows wrinkled upwards in the saddest horror. Not once did Audrey’s eyes leave mine, even in death. She clung to that last breath and faded from my eyes grasp without a single word to sooth or wound me.
