Legend of Madam White Snake
This Classic Chinese folktale tells the love story of a man and a white snake. Two snakes, one white and the other green, lived on Mount E’mei. With their magical powers, they transformed themselves into two beautiful young maidens. Madam White Snake, assuming the name “Bai Suzhen”, fell in love with a young man Xu Xian, married him and bore him a son – Meng Jiao.

An abbot named Fa Hai was determined to separate the two lovers. With his powers, Fa Hai imprisoned Madam White Snake under the Thunder Peak Pagoda at West Lake.

When Meng Jiao grew up and learnt of what happened, he went to the Thunder Peak Pagoda and pleaded with the heavens to release mother. His act filial piety was not in vain, Madam White Snake was relaesed and reunited with her son.
