Description v-day: love equals money
my-life: no love equals loneliness

an explanation for all of you out there trying to figure out what math/code is depicted here.
short answer: none.
long answer: its pseudocode (a kind of). i had to reinvent it to depict what i wanted.
<3 is a heart (try tilting your head) and read as LOVE
! is not a factorial (example. n! = 1 * 2 * 3 * ... * (n-1) * n) but rather it is a negation as in JAVA != (not equal. example. 1 != 2), so this would be NO LOVE
def. means defining
$$ is of course read as MONEY

hope this helps you all math/code fans out there.

I really like the idea of using very figurative graphic elements, and almost scientific, mathematical denotation to represent something very un-exact, and very personal and human. The antithesys of the two makes for a great juxtaposition and adds edge to the concept.

I also like the particular symbols you chose, in specific I love the exclamation mark, because in math it also stands for the ..uhhh it just escaped me.. the sum .. of.. uhh you know when you add upp all the integers in a collapsing array.. you surely know.. hehe.. well any ways.. since you are equating your life with a year period, whereas the valentine;s day is just one day in that year, i like the idea of saying that the sum of 365 days of no love equals 1 or loneliness. It's not the best mathematical analogy, since the absence of love would suggest 0 more than 1.. but conceptually and verbally it works.

I wonder if you should have the equality sings alligned perfectly , because they are the central link of the image, inbetween the two sides of each line you are equating, and also they can better integarte the two lines together if the equal to symbols are right on top of one another.. they are the core statement of your concept, and a reference point of sorts.. so i think it would be better to have them alligned than to have the beginning and ending characters form an equilateral imaginary rectangle. You can stil space the rest of the characters out to preserve the visual balance.

You current framing and arrangement is very solid and graphicaly interesting, but I wonder if it can be pushed even further to emphasise some of what you are describing.. like placing things in a different way may also suggest loneliness .. right now I wonder why there is empty space on top and below, what does that space signify, why is that space not a horizontal one, and instead it si vertical.. all of those quesrtions is something you should consider should you want to revisit this deviation.

I know that it's very personal to you, which is why you could push it even further while keeping within the minimalistic style.

Just a suggestion; if you use any code within a deviation to be submitted to a contest, put a quick explanation in the artist's comments section for those who don't know how to read that particular language, or maybe just put a note saying 'the code is PHP' or something like that. Whatever, I didn't have a problem with it, but at first glance I analyzed it mathematically; it would definitely help viewers understand without having to ask so many questions.

Anyways, I like the idea; I think you did a good job portraying it too.

Upon reading that, it made me giggle, and I went back to analyze it mathematically and boy, did it not make any sense

exactly, especially since heart(love) factorial would be <3!, not !<3

thats not the correct way to denote 'no love' mathematically....
it should be something more like <3'...
obviously the admin didnt notice so youre lucky
but mark my words that really doesnt make any sense mathematically... and seeing as that's the whole point, id say point failed

If i knew php...
does everyone else know it or what? am i like the only person to look at it and think it doesnt make any sense?
youre not portraying your message very clearly, and i see very very few other ways of critically analysing the piece.

POverdrive In reply to jam-techno [2006-02-14 20:08:34 +0000 UTC]

what I'm saying is, if you were familiar with any relatively modern programming language (modern being C, php, asp..), you'd be surprised to find out that IT IS in fact correct. the maths way ain't the only way.

I thought, being a mathematician, that the !<3 would have meant "there is one and only one love or vday"... then the !<3 == 1 would have been pretty mysterious...

haha thats a thats a really clever idea, putting the factorial of love equalling 1. nice and mathy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

creeping-l-death In reply to bjdrury [2006-02-14 01:25:57 +0000 UTC]

it;s not factorial. if you know programming "!" in front of any variable means the opposite of that variable (or value). it is mostly used in if clauses. for example, if you define a boolean (true or false) you can put "!" to get it's opposite. like so:

bool truth = false;

if(!truth)
{
cout<<"He's telling the truth!";
}

else
{
cout<<"He's a lying bastard! Whack him!";
}

anywayz. coming back to the pic. i like the idea. it's a deserved winner!
