This is Upgrading Reality, a series of sequences following the effects of a leak of strange nanotech out into the multiverse as it seeks to upgrade the world around it.

It was another sunny day in the Hoenn region. The Pokemon Trainer May was continuing on her journey, admiring the morning dew dropping off trees. But what she didn’t know was, that wasn’t dew. The previous night, a hole opened up in the sky and from it a blob of mysterious metallic liquid fell, breaking into droplets as it tumbled, coming to rest on the canopy below. It hadn’t done any harm to the trees themselves, but the nanotech in the blobs wasn’t interested in trees. It waited for its prey to walk by and as fate would have it, May was to be that prey.

As May came to a stop, she felt something heavy and wet land on her bandana. The nanotech “dew” had gathered together and when the leaves couldn’t hold the combined weight, fell right onto her head. She removed her bandana quickly, worried a bird Pokemon had dropped something nasty on her but it was too late to stop the nanotech which had already leached through into her hair. As the mysterious invader got the work, May’s hair turned from a dusty brown to a very bright blond and the style changed: It got shorter at the sides but longer at the back. Mayl looked at her bandana to see the mysterious metallic liquid that landed on her but before she could figure out what it was, it seemed to vanish, taking her bandana with it. What had really happened was that the nanotech was being absorbed into Mayl’s clothes and body, beginning its purpose in earnest.

May was always tall for her age but that was no longer the case as Mall began to shrink, seemingly regressing in age. That’s what it looked like from the outside but in reality her bones were being replaced with a sturdy carbon fibre frame, her muscles were being replaced with pistons and servos and her skin turned into a polymer unknown to this world, designed to replicate the appearance and feel of human skin. This new artificial body was quite different from her previous one with a larger head, shorter limbs and bigger eyes. The nanotech also altered her outfit to change it from the comfortable exploration gear to a cuter ensemble with her shorts splitting open into a skirt before merging with her top to create a red dress. Her gloves faded away and the mass was redistributed to the collar of her dress which grew into a detachable hoodie and a nice green ribbon which tied her blond hair into a ponytail. Last but not least, Moll’s head went cloudy as her grey matter was converted into silicone and her memories were converted into those of a housekeeping robot with the designation DLN-002.

As Roll came online she found herself standing out in the wilderness far from where she was familiar with.
“No idea where I am but what a lovely place!”
This world had been given a friendly and helpful robot but would other worlds have such luck?
