Because my car was fucked I was forced to spend the night in a hotel at the airport. But got a room with a view at least, got this shot right out the window!Related content

Yep in a big truck like that. Most of it is how to avoid accidents from stupid stuff other people do.....keep your distance behind other cars even at stop lights.....provide a way out if something should happen. Taking turns properly, backing up, close quarter manuevering...etc.

Well, the easiest way to tell them apart is that the MD-11 has winglets, and the DC-10 does not. But you can't tell from this photo. The DC-10 is also a bit shorter and has a slightly different tail.

Winglets are certainly a good clue. What confuses me is why there are only 3 L-1011 Tristars left flying in the US whilst the cheaper, less reliable DC10 and MD11 continue to fly. It's a travesty that Lockheed failed to break even on the better of the two planes in every respect, especially safety. I understand it had trouble with fuel efficiency though.

Well, the Tristar is getting old. Besides that, not a whole lot were ever made, and I imagine that makes spare parts a whole lot more expensive.

There was one particular DC-10 that made a profit - the one that crashed in Chicago in (?) 1979 after losing an engine on take-off. The insurance paid out more to AA than the a/c cost them to buy

So true. It marked the beginning of the end for them didn't it? I know they grounded all the DC-10s after that accident because of the history of accidents of the a/c and it's cargo door but the Chicago accident was caused by methods used by maintenance.
