Looking at your process makes me think that you could have also flatted the colors in Illustrator as well using the RGB palette/color picker. Not that it's necessary since it's pretty much the same process in Photoshop.
In any case, I may have to try using this technique more myself for some of my own work. Seems that the sketchy nature of what I usually draw could always get a speed up in the process.
